Nationals vs. Cardinals Gameday
Washington heads into Saturday night’s game at Busch Stadium with a 72-82 record after hammering St. Louis 9-1 in Friday’s series opener. The Cardinals fell to 75-79 with their third consecutive loss, while the Nationals improved to 35-41 away from home.
Friday didn’t leave much suspense. Washington scored three times in the first inning, added four more in the third and spent the rest of the night making sure St. Louis never developed any interesting ideas.
Seven runs through three innings is a fairly efficient way to quiet Busch Stadium.
Cade Cavalli worked five scoreless innings for Washington, while Dylan Crews homered and CJ Abrams became the first Nationals player since 2006 to reach 30 home runs and 30 stolen bases in the same season.
St. Louis managed only one run and six hits, continuing a rough stretch that has produced seven losses in its last 10 games. The Cardinals now turn to Michael McGreevy to stop the slide against Andrew Alvarez.
Neither team has October baseball waiting around the corner, but Washington certainly didn’t play like a club checking its vacation calendar Friday.

Washington Nationals vs. St. Louis Cardinals Odds & Last 5
The market has shifted since the opening numbers. Washington is now a slight favorite around -114, with St. Louis approximately -107, while the total has dropped from the writer’s 8.5 to 7.5 at several sportsbooks.
That’s a fairly serious move toward the pitchers considering Washington just scored nine runs in the series opener. Alvarez and McGreevy both bring ERAs below 4.00 into Saturday, so the lower total isn’t exactly difficult to understand.
Washington has gone 5-5 over its last 10 games and owns an even run differential during that stretch. St. Louis is only 3-7 over its last 10 and has been outscored by 13 runs.
The season series is now tied 2-2.
Friday’s 9-1 Washington victory was easily the most lopsided meeting of the four. The Nationals also arrive with a one-game winning streak, while St. Louis is trying to halt a three-game skid at home.
Cardinals Stats
St. Louis is batting .242 with a .316 on-base percentage, but the offense has been inconsistent enough to help produce a 75-79 record. The Cardinals have been more successful when generating traffic, going 52-32 when they record at least eight hits.
Alec Burleson remains the centerpiece of the lineup. He’s hitting .283 with 23 home runs and 111 RBIs, giving St. Louis one dependable run producer during an otherwise disappointing September.
Burleson’s 111 RBIs deserve considerably better company than a three-game Cardinals losing streak.
The recent production hasn’t been nearly as impressive. St. Louis is batting only .217 over its last 10 games and has dropped seven of those contests.
Friday was another rough example.
The Cardinals managed six hits against Washington but didn’t score until the eighth inning, long after the game had gotten away. They’ll need considerably more from the middle of the order Saturday if they’re going to avoid spending another night watching Washington control the scoreboard.
Nationals Stats
Washington’s offense has supplied plenty of power despite the losing record. The Nationals own a .426 team slugging percentage, second-best in the National League, and Friday provided another reminder of how quickly this lineup can produce extra-base damage.
CJ Abrams reached a major milestone in the opener. His first-inning RBI single gave Washington an immediate lead, and he later stole his 30th base to join the 30-30 club after already reaching 30 home runs.
Dylan Crews has also been swinging a productive bat lately.
Crews is 10-for-37 over his last 10 games with two doubles and two home runs, including Friday’s two-run shot. Washington also received a two-run double from Yohandy Morales as the lineup buried St. Louis early.
The pitching staff has been far less dependable across the full season, which is one reason Washington remains 10 games below .500 despite its offensive power.
Friday was the pleasant exception. Cavalli and the bullpen held St. Louis to one run, giving the Nationals exactly the kind of pitching night they haven’t received often enough this season.

Nationals vs. Cardinals Pitching Matchup
Andrew Alvarez takes the ball for Washington at 2-6 with a 3.35 ERA. The rookie left-hander also owns a 1.27 WHIP with 99 strikeouts, numbers that look considerably better than his win-loss record.
Run support has been part of the problem, although his teammates apparently remembered where the plate was Friday.
Alvarez has generally done a solid job limiting damage and keeping Washington competitive. St. Louis presents a lineup hitting only .217 over its last 10 games, so this isn’t exactly the worst assignment he could draw.
McGreevy has pitched well enough that his 7-9 record requires considerably more context than blame.
Michael McGreevy counters at 7-9 with a 3.83 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 112 strikeouts. Like Alvarez, his season has been steadier than the losing record suggests.
That makes the starting matchup stronger than the two teams’ overall records might imply.
The question is what happens once those starters leave. Washington’s pitching staff has carried a 4.71 ERA across the season, while St. Louis has had its own late-game problems during this losing stretch.
Washington Nationals vs. St. Louis Cardinals bottom line: Alvarez and McGreevy can keep this orderly for a while, but Friday showed how quickly Washington’s power can turn a quiet night into a scoreboard problem.

Nationals Cardinals Free Pick: Over 8.5
Here is my Nationals Cardinals free pick: Over 8.5 is my play Saturday night at Busch Stadium. Washington just hung nine runs on St. Louis in Friday’s opener, and the Nationals have enough extra-base power to make this number reachable without needing a complete Cardinals contribution. Andrew Alvarez and Michael McGreevy have both pitched well, but neither bullpen deserves automatic trust.
Washington’s offense has become the more interesting side of this matchup. CJ Abrams reached the 30-30 club Friday, while Dylan Crews homered and continued a productive September. The Nationals have also slugged .426 as a team.
Eight and a half isn’t tiny, but Friday showed how quickly this matchup can get crooked.
St. Louis needs to help more than it did in the opener. The Cardinals have dropped three straight, yet Alec Burleson remains a legitimate middle-of-the-order threat and Busch Stadium hasn’t completely muted this lineup at home.
The starting pitchers are the obvious argument against us.
At the end of the day, Alvarez and McGreevy don’t need to implode for this to get there; a couple early runs and ordinary bullpen work can do the job.
Washington has enough pop to create damage, and St. Louis should offer more resistance than one lonely run.
Over 8.5 is my play.
