One of the best vs one of the worst in this one, as the Nationals sit in 2nd place in the NL take on the Padres who sit in 3rd last.
San Diego is in the midst of a tear down and rebuild, whereas the Nats have passed this stage having selected near the top of the draft for years and are now a powerhouse.
As noted, the Nationals went through a substantial ground-up build, where they were able to select now-superstars Stephen Strasburg, Bryce Harper and Anthony Rendon all near or at the top of the drafts from 2009-2011.
The squad then were able to trade and sign for significant pieces such as Max Scherzer , Daniel Murphy, Ben Revere, and Jason Werth to compliment the aforementioned superstars and other core selections in Wilson Ramos, Joe Ross and Ryan Zimmerman.
Taking the hill in this one is Scherzer, who the Nats signed to a mega-contract after earning a Cy Young in Detroit and has continued as one of the games’ true aces. He holds a 3.40 ERA and 1.00 WHIP on the year with 118 Ks on the year.
Scherzer has an 8-4 record in 2016, and should be able to pad those stats against the anemic offense in San Diego.
San Diego Padres
Matt Kemp was lured away from the Los Angeles Dodgers when the Padres were in go-for-it mode in the not so distant past.
They made moves to get Kemp, Justin Upton, Andrew Cashner, Craig Kimbrel, etc. that depleted their minor league prospect pipeline, and are now in the midst of trying to replenish it.
San Diego should be a lock for a top-5 pick this year and may be able to deal off pieces such as Kemp, Cashner and other veterans in effort to expedite the rebuild.
Colin Rea is in his first season in the big leagues after being considered a middle-of-the-road prospect. His results this season have been mixed, as he holds an overall 5.37 ERA and 1.45 WHIP in his 12 starts.
He is not much of a strikeout pitcher, which San Diego allows more leeway for, but should be in tough against one of the games’ best offenses which has been on fire in June.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
- The Nats are 22-13 on the road
- Washington is 8-2 in their past 10 games
- Scherzer has double-digit strikeouts in two of his last 3 starts
- San Diego is 4-6 in their past 10 games
- The Padres are 16-21 at home
