We are a little more than a third of the way through the season and it looks like these team’s paths have been established.
Washington will be among the best teams in the league while San Diego will look for glimmers of potential success.
It is not too late to change the script but something dramatic will have to happen.
This series is likely to play to expectations.
The Nats are in first and will be looking to pad their lead at San Diego.
Washington just had a strong series against the Cubs and the Dodgers are up next so they could be excused if they are not in the sharpest mental state.
That doesn’t mean they won’t dominate though. Just a couple of runs per game could mean a sweep.
Joe Ross has been good all season long. Not Strasburg good but he has only had a couple of starts where he hasn’t been good enough to win.
The Nats have won his last four starts and he is sharp on the road with a 2.54 ERA. The Washington bullpen continues to compliment their deep rotation.
The staff is 3rd in the Majors in ERA.
San Diego Padres
It will be an interesting season if the most positive thing they do is get out from under the contract of James Shields, though I think they are still paying him.
There is pretty much no aspect of this team that is performing to expectations. The brightest spot is that Wil Myers is having a good season.
He has already passed his season high in homer from his rookie season with Tampa.
Over six starts Christian Friedrich has put up some good numbers. His ERA is a sparking 2.12 and he is coming off his best start of the season – 6+ shutout innings against his old team Colorado.
If he had that kind of mastery of Coors Field in the past he might still be with the Rox. If the Padres can get a lead the bullpen usually keeps it.
Closer Fernando Rodney has yet to give up an earned run all season.

Free Washington Nationals vs. San Diego Padres MLB Prediction:
The Nats are clearly the better team. They also have been good on the road this season, heading into Thursday, slightly better than at home. Their offense could be suppressed by the ballpark but that is not much of a worry in this matchup.
San Diego will be looking for small wins so beating the Nats, one of the better teams in the league could be something that livens them up. Friedrich has been a surprise in the rotation but it is unclear whether we can reset expectations of him.
4* Free MLB Betting Pick: Washington -1.5
Washington will be favoured in this one but I fear there won’t be enough value on the moneyline. This is a spot where you can comfortably back them on the run line. Of course they won’t win every game but this is a good spot.
