Washington’s offense has quietly put together a strong season, carrying a .425 slugging percentage while hitting 203 home runs. The Nationals are also among baseball’s highest-scoring clubs, so the 73-83 record hasn’t been caused by a shortage of offense.
The problem has been preventing runs. Washington owns a 4.66 ERA near the bottom of the majors, and Sunday’s loss in St. Louis included the bullpen’s 42nd blown save of the season. That’s a fairly efficient way to turn a good lineup into a losing team.
CJ Abrams hit his 31st home run Sunday and continues to drive the offense, while James Wood has supplied another major power threat. Washington has enough damage throughout this lineup to make Detroit work even if the Nationals aren’t playing meaningful September baseball.
The Nationals had won three straight before Sunday’s loss, including 9-1 and 8-5 victories over St. Louis. They arrive in Detroit playing considerably better baseball than their overall record might suggest.

Nationals vs. Tigers Pitching Matchup
DJ Herz makes his long-awaited return for Washington after missing the major-league season while recovering from Tommy John surgery. Monday will be his first appearance in the majors since September 2024, so this isn’t simply a pitcher making his first start of 2026.
Herz returned to minor-league competition during the summer before suffering a flexor strain that temporarily interrupted his rehab. He eventually resumed pitching and reached 65 pitches in his most recent outing, making a limited workload a reasonable expectation Monday.
Herz is finally back, but Washington isn’t likely to treat his repaired elbow like it’s mid-June.
River Ryan brings an equally interesting comeback story to the other side. Detroit acquired him from the Dodgers in the Tarik Skubal trade, and Monday will be his Tigers debut and first major-league appearance since 2024.
Ryan returned from Tommy John surgery and a hamstring issue before making two September starts for Triple-A Toledo. Detroit has deliberately brought him along slowly, so expecting him to suddenly chew through seven innings would be asking quite a bit.
That leaves two talented arms making significant returns rather than two unknown pitchers beginning their seasons with clean slates. The stuff is interesting on both sides, but workload and bullpen management could become every bit as important as the starters themselves.

The Nationals just took two of three in St. Louis before Sunday’s bullpen collapse, and they’ve scored at least eight runs in three of their last four wins. Detroit, meanwhile, has dropped three of four and scored one run in each of those losses.
The pitching matchup is unusual enough to keep me away from laying Detroit’s price. DJ Herz is returning from Tommy John surgery for his first major-league appearance since 2024, while River Ryan is making his Tigers debut after his own long road back.
This is not exactly a matchup built for comfortable assumptions.
Ryan has electric stuff, but Detroit has been bringing him along carefully, and Washington owns a .425 slugging percentage with 203 homers. If both starters are working on shorter leashes, this becomes a bullpen game sooner than usual.
That’s where +130 matters. Washington’s relief corps has been shaky, but Detroit isn’t exactly arriving hot enough for me to lay this number.
Two eliminated teams, two returning starters and plus money on the more dangerous offense? I’ll take it.
