We were unlucky with our Italy moneyline play in the play-in game of Group D when Venezuela got three in the ninth to take a 4-2 lead. Then we got a little lucky when Italy got one in the bottom half to cash the runline play.
Miggy Cabrera bailed his country out of early elimination with his game-tying dinger in that ninth inning, a fitting gesture for a team that has gotten by on mostly talent. There isn’t much sense of cohesiveness among the roster.
But they’re in and can still come together as they continue to play into shape. Felix Hernandez doesn’t look great, but he’s the best Venezuela has and we know what he’s capable of.
He needs to get through four innings to give Venezuela’s bullpen a fighting chance – it has been both overworked and ineffective with the exception of the 4-3 win over Italy.
United States
Meanwhile, the United States welcomes a new starting pitcher to the mix with Drew Smyly making the trip from the Mariners’ spring training facility in Arizona to San Diego.
Smyly has so far impressed his new team following a January trade from Tampa Bay. Of course, his opponent in this one is his new teammate in Seattle.
The pressure is on Smyly to follow the three previous American starters. Chris Archer, Marcus Stroman and Danny Duffy combined to throw 12.2 scoreless innings in Pool C.
And while I’m not particularly keen on him tonight, he should at least match what the King does across from him.
