I’m looking at Venezuela’s starting lineup and wondering how the hell that team gets ballgame’d by an island of five million people.
That said, we took PR because, population aside, its team is really good. But that’s the first mercy rule of the tournament, unless Israel also got Taiwan earlier this week.
Altuve, Prado, Carlos Gonzalez, Victor Martinez, Salvador Perez and Alcides Escobar all went hitless last night. That’s a lot of star power for a youngster like Seth Lugo keep down into the sixth inning on a pitch count (Mets fans smile).
I was going to say it didn’t look like Felix Hernandez was horrible but then I remembered who I was talking about. I plan to stand strong in starch denial whenever he starts fading. I refuse to believe that’s now.
The King pitched around an error to record eight outs on 51 pitches (2 runs allowed).
The only thing Venezuela proved last night was that the staff is thin after the King. And while perhaps Victor Martinez should be thinner, this is not the place to be sleek, especially with a fiery Italian team on deck.
The good news is that if Venezuela actually wants to compete, it gets a chance to beat a 1-0 team right away.
When I watched the first three innings of Italy and Mexico the other day I had a feeling Mexico was in for all it could handle. But I was still shocked to see the final. Italy scored five runs in the ninth to win it 10-9.
In those first three innings I heard the broadcast mention that Italy’s manager is retiring and calling out the baseball federation and people are crying and therefore playing really hard baseball.
In my last post I called Italy the “punching bag” of Group D. Truthfully, I had no idea what I was talking about. In 2013, Italy advanced and then lost back-to-back one-run games to the DR and Puerto Rico.
A win against a Venezuelan All-Star team that doesn’t look like it wants to be will have them marching on to Pool F.
Free Venezuela vs. Italy WBC Prediction:
This is awesome. A scrappy Italian team that wants, more than anything, to just win, against a group of loaded All-Stars who now face a must-win with a little extra something to prove.
4* Free WBC Betting Pick: Italy +180 & Over 9.5 (-120)
Italy won 10-9 the other night; it one’s up it and goes 11-10 in front of what will surely be another great Mexican crowd. Have you heard the ballpark sounds at Charros De Jalisco?!
