The Jays look to continue their winning ways when they face the New York Yankees on Wednesday in the Bronx, NY. As underdogs the last two days the Jays have taken it to the Yankees as the New York bats have simply disappeared. In addition, Gerritt Cole was pulled from the game last night with left hamstring tightness. The Yankees can certainly not afford to lose his 3 or starts with just over 20 games left in the regular season.
The Yankee bats are the big story in New York as desperation starts to settle in towards a possible post-season berth. Everyone in the lineup is struggling as the Yankees have not even picked up an extra-base hit in two days! The Bombers are certainly not bombing anything lately and the rest of the pack in the AL is looming right behind them, including this Jays squad.
Blue Jays
The playoffs!? Yes, indeed the Jays are now thinking that they have the upper hand as the final games of the regular season are playing out. The Toronto Blue Jays only sit 2 games behind the wildcard leading Yankees and they have taken the first two of a 4 game set in the Bronx. Oh, and the Jays are the dog again today btw, as they have been the last 2 games that resulted in wins over the Yanks.
When you do wake up in the morning? This line might not be +110 with the Jays, and it should never have been, to begin with! So, get your bets in as early as possible because the Yankees are about to see themselves out of the playoff hunt.
The Jays will be partly responsible for that after they take today’s win in New York and then they will do it again on Thursday.
Anyone can plainly see the confidence in one dugout and the lack thereof in the other dugout. The Jays all feel as if they can go into Yankee Stadium and win games and that is exactly what they are doing.
Alex Manoah gets the start for Toronto today but has struggled of late getting wins. He has 3 no-decisions and a loss from his last 4 starts and he has given up at least 6 ER in two of those outings. His last start ended up being an 11 – 10 win vs the As but he only went 5 innings giving up 6 ER as he did against Washington on August 17. Overall through 15 starts, Manoah is 5 – 2 with an ERA of 3.63 having thrown 79 1/3 innings.
NY Yankees
Gerritt Cole looked into the dugout and asked to be removed from the game after 3 2/3 innings last night. The Yankees were down 2 – 1 to begin the 3rd inning and Cole got himself in trouble early. With men on first and third and 1 out a sac fly to center field gave the Jays a 3 – 1 lead. Cole immediately turned and rotated his hand basically saying I need to come out and he was quickly escorted into the locker room.
It was seemingly is an issue with a finger or a possible callus on a fingertip but we know now that his left hamstring was the problem. His status is obviously a concern with only 20 games or so left in the regular season.
Gio Urshela needs to totally go back to the drawing board. His strikeouts on Tuesday night were all so ugly, as he looks like a fish out of the water and totally overwhelmed right now. When Steven Matz makes you like as bad as Urshela looked last night? Houston, we have a problem! The entirety of the Yankee lineup seems to be struggling at the same time.
That is baseball in a nutshell though. When your key guys are struggling it seems like everyone is struggling at the same time. Hot and cold is the definition of hitting a baseball and it’s been much colder of late for the Yanks.
The Yanks bullpen held their own after Cole left the game, however, the Yankee bats remain freezing cold. Stanton commits to swinging at a baseball and there is no telling what he will end up chasing sometimes. It baffles the mind when you see some of those weak cuts at balls literally a foot+ off the plate or in the dirt.
The only saving grace for the Yanks on Tuesday was the Red Sox also got spanked so no ground was lost on that front. At the same token, the wildcard chase is not just between Boston and New York and both could be left out of the post-season. Toronto, Seattle, and Oakland are all right behind by a few games, and no lead is safe in September. There is no ‘catching the Tampa Bay Rays’ chatter anymore, so the wildcard chase is the only conversation left to be had.
Luis Gil gets the callup start on Wednesday, and here is how f**king stupid Aaron Boone is… The Dude has an ERA OF … (Crickets) Hmm Hmm, ZERO runs allowed in 3 starts with an 18 / 7 K to BB ratio. So, what do the Yankees do with him? Send him down so the junk in place can throw like sh!t in his place. Seriously, Gil has been tremendous for the Yanks in his brief outings and he gets sent down? Makes no sense, and that is why Aaron Boone should be let go asap. AS SOON AS POSSIBLE! I have been saying it for 2 years and the losses will simply carry on the longer Boone is in the dugout. Watch, listen and learn when I tell you the Yankees will never win anything with Boone running things.
Luis Severino and Domingo German threw a bullpen session at the Stadium today before the game. Both of them looked great throwing from the mound and both could return at some point in September.
