The Toronto Blue Jays were able to get one over on their AL East rivals on opening day taking down the Bronx Bombers by a score of 3-2 in a game which needed to be decided in extra innings.
Toronto Blue Jays
Hyun Jin Ryu was every bit the ace he was touted to be for Toronto, as he had plenty of success in that first game against one of the best batting lineup in all the majors. Now Ross Stripling gets the call for the Blue Birds and he does have some good stuff, but he was not expected to be a starter here in 2021, so it will be interesting to see what kind of rein he gets out on the mound with the Jay’s great bullpen behind him.
Speaking of that bullpen, they might be one of the better units in the American League, as they seemingly put away the Yankees with ease in that first game after Ryu had finished his start and if the hype is going to be real on the Jays this season the bullpen will no doubt play a big role.
The Jays also have a solid, and young, batting lineup which has pop all the way down the order with guys like Grichuk and Rowdy Tellez batting the 7th and 8th spot on Thursday which shows how much depth the Jays have now.
I would look out for Vladdy Jr as well, as I think he can have a huge year here in 2021 especially with the shape he is coming in here with, as he clearly did the work this past offseason.
New York Yankees
With all the praise I just put on the Blue Jays, the Yankees are still deserved favorites to win the AL East, as they have one awesome batting lineup when healthy and a newly bolstered pitching unit which is sure to give the other teams in the division problems.
Corey Kluber is one of those Yankees pitchers who should be able to find success early on here, although we do not really know what to expect from him coming off of a season in which he was only able to pitch one inning.
The big bats for the Yankees did not really show up on opening day with Judge and Stanton unable to make an impact, but with the talent those two guys have I would not count on them being held down too long, so they will no doubt keep Ross Stripling on his toes.

Now I do think the Jays bullpen will be solid this year, but sometimes brute force just wins and I think it will be tough for any pitching unit to keep this Yankee’s batting lineup quite during the early part of the season when they are healthy.
I also believe in the Jay’s bats though, and can see them putting up enough runs to contribute enough to the scoreboard to get this one over the 9 total which is currently posted.
