The Toronto Blue Jays and the Minnesota Twins will play the second of their four-game set this Friday evening from Target Field in Minneapolis.
Toronto comes into this one as the sight favorites, with the total opening at 8.5. Interim manager John Schneider will give Jose Berrios the ball in a homecoming spot, while Twins coach Rocco Baldelli will send the newly-acquired Tyler Mahle to the mound.
Toronto Blue Jays
Toronto comes into this one with an overall record of 58-46 . The Blue Jays currently sit second in the AL East, and they’ve posted a 24-25 record on the road this season. Toronto is 47-57 against the spread this season, with an over-under record of 53-50-1.
Jose Berrios (8-4, 4.96 ERA, 106 K) will make what should be an emotional return to Target Field Friday night. Berrios spent the first 5 1/2 years of his career in Minnesota, posting a 55-45 record, while recording three straight double-digit win seasons.
The eighth-year pitcher is coming off of arguably his finest start of the season, going seven full innings, striking out six, and only giving up one run to his brother-in-law Javy Baez. Berrios has fanned six or more in each of his past five starts, and could be in for another strong performance against his former longtime team.
Berrios has made life easy for the bullpen, going atleast five or more in each of his previous six starts. The Blue Jays relief corps has combined for a 3.88 ERA, while giving up 53 home runs, which is fourth worse in the majors.
The Blue Jays have been juggernauts offensively this season, ranking first in batting average (.264), fourth in slugging percentage (.435), and third in runs scored (500).
Minnesota Twins
Minnesota enters this home bout with a 55-49 record. The Twins currently sit atop the AL Central, an they’ve posted a 29-23 record at home this season. Minnesota is 48-56 against the spread this season, with an over-under record of 49-47-8.
Tyler Mahle will make his first start in a Twins uniform this Friday. Minnesota acquired Mahle for three prospects to strengthen their unit for their potential playoff run, and he should slide right into the top of their rotation.
Mahle has posted a 5-7 record this season, with a 4.40 ERA and 114 strikeouts. The sixth-year pitcher recorded a win in each of his final three wins as a Red and the Twins would love to see that momentum carry over here.
Mahle has been very reliable over his last ten starts, going less than six innings just once, and that should make life easier for the bullpen. Minnesota also brought in closer Jorge Lopez, who’s enjoying a career year in his first full season as a closer, to shore up the back end from Baltimore. The Twins have posted a 3.82 ERA, while allowing 59 home runs, good for most in the league.
Minnesota has been solid at the plate this season, ranking ninth in batting average (.251), sixth in on base percentage (.321), and seventh in slugging percentage (.417).
