The Blue Jays will be in the windy city to start a series with the White Sox on Monday evening.
Andrew Vaughn matched a career high with four hits, including a solo homer, and the White Sox celebrated Tim Anderson’s return with an 8-7 victory over the Blue Jays on Monday.
Josh Harrison hit a walk-off single with two outs in the 12th inning, and the White Sox topped the Blue Jays for a wild 7-6 victory on Tuesday.
Toronto Blue Jays
I am not going to be hyperbolic and say the Blue Jays have been some bad team this season because they have not. However, let us not all pretend like they have been something great, either.
With a team like this, it is very important to remember the expectations and narratives surrounding them in the pre-season. This is a team that was the favorite to win their division and was a lot of people’s pick to represent the AL in the World Series.
Something that has defined their season so far is their inability to play up to their talent level. Based on the players on their roster, they simply should be playing better than what they have done so far.
Don’t get me wrong, they have played well at times and have seemed to figure it out before, but it still has not happened on a regular enough basis. There is still plenty of the season for them to get into a better groove, but there is no guarantee that is going to happen.
When it comes to their offense, it is hard to be too critical of them there. They feature one of the best lineups in the sport and are never out of a game with the guys they have 1-9.
In terms of their pitching, they have a lot of work to do. Besides a few guys who are dependable, the rotation is very hit or miss and is not one that would scare opposing lineups. I also would not call the bullpen a true strength of theirs and they have some vulnerabilities there as well.
Their lack of effective pitching was once again put on display in their weekend series with the Yankees. Yes, they did salvage the last game, but they still allowed a total of 25 runs to their divisional rival. Based on those numbers, it makes sense why New York has played so well against them this season and currently has clear control of the East.
Chicago White Sox
The White Sox continue to be an up-and-down baseball team and are another example of a team that has vastly underperformed in 2022.
Trust me, I was not nearly as bullish on this team as some of the pundits, but I still expected them to be a solid team in the AL and be more competitive than what they have done so far.
At nearly 65 games this season, did I expect them to be better than 2 games below .500? You’re damn right and their record is just one of the many frustrating things about them this season.
I get that this is a team that has holes and they will be exposed at times, but what they have done so far is just not acceptable. More times than not, Chicago is a team that seems one step behind with a manager who should not be managing.
The only reason you should feel confident as a fan is the fact they play in a weaker division. That is not to say teams like the Twins and the Tribe are horrible, but the Central is not the juggernaut that some other divisions are.
It is not time to totally give up on the Sox yet and declare their season over, but if they do not turn around quick, it will be that time and this season will be remembered as a lost one for the Southsiders.
An issue that plagued the Chi Sox a year ago was the inability to beat the better teams in baseball consistently and that was put on display over the weekend. They did take game 2 but still lost two of three against an Astros team that is clearly a lot better than them.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
- Blue Jays are 17-16 ATS on the road
- Blue Jays O/U are 16-16-1 on the road
- White Sox are 13-19 ATS at home
- White Sox O/U are 16-15-1 at home
Toronto Blue Jays vs. Chicago White Sox MLB Prediction:
Neither one of these teams has quite been able to find the form that they are looking for, but they are both fighting for a playoff spot. I feel better about Chicago in this particular game.
Giolito has been terrible this month, but he has built a reputation as one of the top starting arms in the majors. I would be surprised if he does not bounce back with a decent outing on Wednesday afternoon, which would put his team in good shape.
Give me the White Sox again.
