It’s Shohei Ohtani night in Anaheim as the Angels pitcher has been cleared from his blister issues. There could be some rust as the right-hander makes his first start since April 4th, but LAA is still a -200 favorite over Texas.
A big inning was the theme in Monday night’s series opener. The Rangers brought home 5 in the 6th inning, and survived a 4-run 7th from the Angels to pick up a 6-4 win as +195 underdogs.
The Rangers seem like they play up to their competition – and down. Texas recently took 3 of 4 at Tampa Bay, but then dropped 2 of 3 to Baltimore back at home. A win in the series opener bodes well for Chris Woodward’s team.
Texas starter Kohei Arihara dazzled on Monday holding the Angels to just 2 hits in his 5.2 IP. The Rangers bullpen got a little shaky after Arihara left, but they did just enough to win. That includes holding Mike Trout to an 0-4, 3 strikeout night.
Jordan Lyles will try to bring some more of that medicine when he makes his 4th start of the year in game two. The right-hander will serve up the long ball (4HR in 15.1 IP) and some runs (4.70 ERA) so the Angels offense could be in for one.
The Texas offense has the worst OPS in MLB, but may get a rusty Ohtani on Tuesday. Brock Holt is the only Rangers player to ever face the Angels starter, which doesn’t make things any easier.
Los Angeles Angels
It’s all about the rhythm of Ohtani in this matchup, who hasn’t pitched in 16 days. He was great in that game, allowing just 1ER while striking out 7 in 4.2 IP against a good White Sox offense.
Monday’s loss was disappointing for the Angels, as they should’ve been fresh after having the previous two nights off. Saturday’s and Sunday’s game against the Twins was cancelled for health and safety precautions from Minnesota.
The good news is the Angels offense has a great chance to get back to form on Tuesday vs. Lyles. LAA has a couple 10+ run games in their previous five, and are top 5 in runs/game, average, and OPS.
Justin Upton has gone 5-10 in his career vs. Lyles, and also has 2 HR and 5 RBI in the last two games. Trout is just 3-12 vs. the Rangers starter, but had been on base in 32 straight games prior to Monday.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
- Rangers are 5-0 last 5 on the road
- Under is 20-5 in Angels last 25 at home vs. Rangers
- Over is 4-1 in Angels last 5 home games
Free Texas Rangers vs. Los Angeles Angels MLB Prediction:
We don’t really know what to expect from Ohtani, and there’s always a chance his persistent blister issue could flare up again. That being said the right-hander was sharp in his only start of the year vs. the White Sox.
The Rangers have also never really faced the Angels starter except for Brock Holt. That puts them at a huge disadvantage, especially when their starter Lyles has been a bit shaky to start the season.
