These teams played a wild one on Opening Day. The Royals got the win and have to be excited about their early returns on offense.
Ditto for Texas but Kyle Gibson did not even last an inning. Texas is probably going to go into most game not knowing what they are going to get on the mound.
Texas Rangers
When you start the first game of the season scoring 5 runs you have to like your chances of winning the game, not losing 14-10, but that is what happened to the Rangers. The strongest positive is that they scored those 10 runs without hitting a homer. I am not sure if that is an indicator of the new ball or whatever but this team has to be able to string together hits if they want to compete. Only Joey Gallo would be a regular deep threat.
The Rangers’ pitching was hit hard in the opener. For game two they are looking to Kohei Arihara. He is an import from the Japanese League and I think it is fair to say that players with that background have been 50/50 propositions. I do like the fact that the Royals, who jumped all over the Rangers in the opener, won’t be familiar with him.
Kansas City Royals
The Royals answered the Rangers offensive explosion with five runs of their own so the game was tied 5-5 at the end of the first. The offense went on to score more than a run in three other innings. It was good to see Jorge Soler go yard after struggling last season. And he didn’t strike out. The offense was especially impressive given that catalyst Adalberto Mondesi is unavailable to start the season.
Mike Minor is making his first start in a Royals uniform since 2017. He pitched well for KC, though often in relief and that is what made him viable again. They are looking for him to help lead a young rotation this season. If he is competitive this team might be able to surprise.
