Oddsmakers are calling it a close one when the Rays and Royals meet up again on Tuesday night. Tampa Bay scored a 4-1 win in the series opener, stretching their win streak to four games.
KC is still a slight -115 favorite in game two however. The Royals have won 4 of their last 6, but there are signs that the offense is starting to falter. Kansas City has plated four total runs in the last three games.
Tampa Bay Rays
Tampa Bay got a gem from Josh Fleming on Tuesday as he spun 5.1 innings of 2-hit ball. Three relievers finished out the next 3.2 innings holding the Royals to just 5 total hits in the game.
The Rays didn’t exactly tear things up with just 7 hits on Monday, but it was a cold night and temps late in the game were in the high 20s with the wind chill. Two of the Rays 4 ER were unearned.
Temps will be slightly warmer in game two, but still in the 40s. It’s looking like another pitcher’s night and Rich Hill will take any advantage he can get. The 41-year-old has looked it, posting a 7.53 ERA in three starts.
The left-hander is still just 1-0, but that’s because the Rays have scored 21 runs in his three starts. Hill has allowed 4 runs in each, getting out of the 5th just once and serving up 4HR in 14.1 IP.
Kansas City Royals
Tampa starter Hill also gets the benefit of facing a KC offense that has really slammed on the brakes. The Royals had scored at least 3 runs in 7 of their first 9 games, but have been held to 1, 2, and 1 the last three.
Only five KC batters have ever faced the veteran Hill, getting a combined 17ABs. Salvador Perez (1-2) is one of them, and he’ll be looked at for some production on Tuesday after hitting 3 HRs the past week.
Carlos Santana also has 7 hits in his last 22 AB (.322) but along with Perez (.286), those are the only two KC batters hitting above .227 over the last 7 games.
With that lack of run production lately, this one’s on you Brad Keller (1-1, 9.58 ERA). The righty bounced back into form with 1 ER over 5.2 vs. LAA last time out, but he gave up 10 ER in his first two starts of the year over just 4.2 IP.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
- Rays are 13-3 last 16 vs. Kansas City
- Rays are 4-1 last 5 road games
- Under is 6-1 in Royals last 7 games
- Under is 6-1 in Royals last 7 at home
Free Tampa Bay Rays vs. Kansas City Royals MLB Prediction:
This total is tough to call based solely on the weather. Both pitchers have been getting rocked for the most part this season, but the KC offense has especially struggled lately and temps are going to be in the low 40s again.
At least Keller looked good last time out, as Hill has allowed 4ER in each of his three starts. The veteran isn’t going to want to be out there on a cold, windy night which ultimately gives the Royals an edge at home.
4* Free MLB Betting Pick: Royals -115
This one may not be pretty, but Kansas City has some talent (albeit that isn’t producing lately). A play on the under 8.5 looks good too.
