The Boston Red Sox look to recover from one of the worst opening series in franchise history when they host the Tampa Bay Rays at Fenway Park.
Tampa Bay Rays
The Rays started off their American League championship defense with an up and down series against the Marlins. While they did take the series two games to one, they gave up more runs than usual.
Last season, the Rays won games largely thanks to their defense and pitching, which both ranked in the top seven in baseball. They gave up 12 runs to the Marlins Saturday, an uncharacteristic mark for the Rays pitching staff.
Michael Wacha starts Monday against a Red Sox offense that was non-existent in its first three games. The 29-year-old righty is coming off a rough year with a 1-4 record and 6.62 ERA. There’s no better opportunity for him to right the ship than staring down the struggling Red Sox at Fenway.
Boston Red Sox
For Boston, it doesn’t get much worse than getting ran out of the ballpark three straight times by the lowly Baltimore Orioles. This sweep was the first time since 1948 that the Red Sox started a season 0-3 at Fenway Park.
The Red Sox slumped through most of last season, and that trend has carried over into 2021. Boston is hitting just .145 as a team entering Monday and slugging .177.
Nick Pivetta gets the nod as the starter to kick-start Monday’s opener. The righty wasn’t on the mound much in 2020, but he posted a 6.89 ERA, 17 strikeouts and a 1.53 WHIP. He could really use a strong start for a Red Sox team that seemingly already has their backs against the wall.
