Cardinals vs. Giants Gameday
The St. Louis Cardinals enter Tuesday at 72-73, sitting third in the NL Central after a 5-4 loss to San Francisco in 11 innings Monday. St. Louis is 5-5 over its last 10 and owns a 38-35 road record.
San Francisco improved to 60-85 with Monday’s walk-off victory. The Giants are also 5-5 over their last 10, with Shay Whitcomb’s infield single ending the opener in the 11th.
Monday’s opener needed 11 innings before San Francisco escaped with a 5-4 victory.
That was the first meeting between these clubs this season. The Cardinals will try to answer behind Quinn Mathews, while San Francisco counters with Landen Roupp. With the Giants below .500 at home and St. Louis playing winning baseball on the road, the matchup remains fairly even.

St. Louis Cardinals vs. San Francisco Giants Odds & Last 5
San Francisco is a slight home favorite around -112 on the moneyline, with St. Louis near -104. The runline has the Cardinals -1.5 at a plus price and the Giants +1.5 heavily juiced. The total is 8, with the under carrying slightly more juice.
Monday’s opener was every bit as tight as those odds suggest. St. Louis tied the game in the ninth, both teams scored in the 10th, and San Francisco finally won 5-4 in the 11th.
Recent offensive results have bounced around for both clubs.
The Cardinals scored 10 runs in a recent win at Colorado, while San Francisco put up nine against the Mets on Saturday. Three of the Giants’ last five games have reached at least nine combined runs.
Giants Stats
San Francisco has been respectable offensively despite its 60-85 record. The Giants are batting around .248 with a slugging percentage just above .400, while Rafael Devers remains the biggest power threat. He has 35 home runs and continues to anchor the middle of the lineup.
The pitching staff has been less consistent.
San Francisco carries an ERA above four, but Logan Webb gave the Giants exactly what they needed Monday. He held St. Louis to one run on three hits over six innings. That strong start kept San Francisco in control until the Cardinals rallied late.
The offense did enough to finish the job.
Devers reached base four times with two doubles and an RBI, while Bryce Eldridge drove in three runs. San Francisco eventually needed Whitcomb’s 11th-inning infield single to secure the 5-4 victory. The Giants have scored at least five runs in three of their last five games.

Cardinals Stats
St. Louis enters Tuesday batting .244 with a .317 on-base percentage and a slugging percentage below .400. The Cardinals have been more middle-of-the-pack offensively than explosive. Power has not been the defining feature of this lineup.
Alec Burleson continues to provide much of the production.
Burleson hit his 22nd home run Monday and drove in his 104th run, giving St. Louis another big swing in the opener. Nathan Church also doubled and drove in a run. Jose Fermin’s ninth-inning sacrifice fly forced extra innings.
The pitching staff has been inconsistent for the year.
St. Louis carries an ERA above four and has had trouble keeping opponents off base consistently. Michael McGreevy still delivered a solid start Monday, allowing three runs, two earned, over 6 2/3 innings. The bullpen couldn’t finish it, allowing San Francisco to score in both extra frames.
The Cardinals have enough offense to stay competitive without overwhelming opponents. Burleson remains their most dependable run producer, and Monday showed they can manufacture late runs even without piling up hits.

Cardinals vs. Giants Pitching Matchup
Quinn Mathews gets the ball for St. Louis with a 1-2 record and 4.38 ERA. The left-hander has 24 strikeouts and a 1.58 WHIP.
Mathews is still searching for consistency Tuesday.
The Cardinals are 1-3 in his four starts as a moneyline underdog. Limiting baserunners will be important against Rafael Devers. St. Louis also needs Mathews to avoid an early bullpen call.
Landen Roupp counters for San Francisco at 8-13 with a 4.17 ERA. He has 137 strikeouts and a 1.29 WHIP, giving the Giants the more experienced starter.
Neither starter owns dominant run-prevention numbers.
St. Louis will try to create traffic against Roupp, while San Francisco will test Mathews’ control. That leaves both offenses with an opening if either starter makes early mistakes.
St. Louis Cardinals vs. San Francisco Giants bottom line: neither starter owns a major statistical edge, leaving both offenses with opportunities Tuesday night.

Cardinals Giants Free Pick: Over 8
Here is my Cardinals Giants free pick: I’m playing the Over 8, and neither starting pitcher gives me much reason to expect a shutdown game.
Quinn Mathews enters with a 4.38 ERA and 1.58 WHIP, while Landen Roupp owns a 4.17 ERA and 1.29 WHIP. That gives both lineups a realistic path to early traffic and crooked innings.
Monday’s opener also showed how quickly this matchup can open up. San Francisco won 5-4 in 11 innings, with the clubs combining for nine runs.
The middle innings are where I think this gets interesting.
Neither starter needs to implode for these offenses to push eight runs into danger.
St. Louis has Alec Burleson swinging a productive bat, while San Francisco can answer with Rafael Devers. The Giants also scored nine runs against the Mets three games ago, so there is enough punch here.
I don’t love betting overs at Oracle Park, but the pitching matchup makes this different. Mathews has allowed plenty of traffic, and Roupp’s 8-13 record comes with an ERA above four.
A 4-4 game gets us to the number before extras even become a factor. After Monday’s back-and-forth finish, I’m willing to bet both offenses create enough pressure again.
I’ll take the Over 8.
