The Pittsburgh Pirates are sending an early message to the St. Louis Cardinals this season.
After taking Opening Day 4-1, they came back on Tuesday with a 6-5 walkoff win in the 11th inning. They’ll go for the sweep on Wednesday night as they look to get off to a 3-0 start this year.

The Pirates have wasted no time this season showing what kind of team they are destined to be here in 2016. After handling Opening Day with rather ease, the Pittsburgh offense played the hero role on Tuesday night, erasing a 5-3 deficit before winning the game on a walk off single in the 11th.
Pittsburgh saw the Cardinals pen retire 18 batters in a row before a walk in the 11th started the game winning rally. Jordy Mercer slapped a 2-2 pitch the other way, scoring the newly extended Gregory Polanco to seal the win for the Pirates.
To try and grab the sweep, Pittsburgh will send out Juan Nicasio. The pitched out of the bullpen for Los Angeles last season as he finished with a 4.88 ERA. He was a starter in his time with Colorado, giving him the experience necessary to fill the 3 hole in the Pirates rotation.
St. Louis Cardinals
The Cardinals ran away with the division last year winning 100 games and forced Pittsburgh to have to deal with Chicago in the NL Wild Card Game, ultimately eliminating them.
St. Louis has not gotten off to the start they would have liked, losing the first 2 games as their pitching as really let them down. Michael Wacha was knocked around for 10 hits in just 4.1 innings, allowing 5 runs.
Looking to switch their fate, the Cardinals will send out Mike Leak, who was traded mid season to San Francisco. In 30 starts combined, Leake finished 11-10 as he struggled with the Giants going just 2-5. He’ll look to rebound from a poor 2nd half of the season last year that saw him really struggle with his command.
