You seem to never be able to count out the Cardinals and right now they are holding down that second Wild Card in the NL.
This is a series where they have to make some hay because things are rally tight right now.
They are looking to a familiar face in Wainwright and it would be ideal if he got on track. Philly is playing out the string hoping these games can be good learning opportunities.
St. Louis Cardinals
All season long the Cardinals offense has outperformed expectations but they have now dipped below 5 runs per game. The good news is that they are playing good ball having won four in a row heading into Thursday, all on the road.
This is a series to definitely take advantage of. Multiple contributors here with 7 players with 14 or more homers.
It has been good to see him on the mound but this is not the same Adam Wainwright we saw before an injury robbed him of most of 2015.
In his last outing he lasted just 2 innings against the Cubs and that has been far too common than his shutout of the Marlins to start the second half.
His numbers on the road have been especially disastrous – 6.72 ERA.
Philadelphia Phillies
The Phillies are not in the race but they have not fallen off a cliff, just a steady decline over the last three months.
It is easy to see why too, the offense is terrible – just two regulars batting over .250. One guy who has caught my eye of late is Tommy Joseph, heir apparent to Ryan Howard.
He has 16 homers in just 226 at bats.
You can see how this group might be better in the future.
Things got pretty bad for Adam Morgan, to the point that they took him out of the rotation for a little while.
This will be his third start back out there and it has been mostly the same stuff.
It hasn’t mattered home or road, he has been smacked around pretty good. Maybe it is a learning experience but maybe it is that they can’t really include him in their future plans in a real way. At least not as a starter.
