St. Louis Cardinals
The Cardinals beat the Phillies in extra-inning for the second time in as many nights on Wednesday, erasing a five-run deficit to win 8-7.
Michael Wacha only lasted four innings, serving up nine hits and conceding five runs but the ‘pen came to the rescue. Four Cardinals’ relievers didn’t give up a run until the bottom of the 10th when Seung-Hwan Oh had a two-run lead to protect.
The offense came back from five runs down with the long ball. Tommy Pham hit his second in two nights in the fifth to make it 5-1. Jed Gyrko, who also homered on Tuesday, made it 5-3 the very next inning.
Jose Martinez smashed a pinch-hit shot in the eighth and then Pham connected again in the ninth to tie it at five.
The Cards got two in the 10th but Dexter Fowler also left the game with a quad problem. The ace, Carlos Martinez will start for St. Louis as it goes for a sweep on Thursday.
Nick Pivetta looked in control again until the ran out of gas in the middle innings. He was still very good – striking out 10 in six quality innings.
But when you’re 22-48 you must have a certain propensity for losing ball games, which the Phillies do.
Howie Kendrick had another three-hit game out of the 2-hole. He’s hitting .350 in 120 at-bats this season.
Aaron Nola faces Martinez on Thursday afternoon. He’s got 47 strikeouts to just 16 walks this season but the ERA at 4.76 has been a bit disappointing. The Phils have lost five of his six starts since missing a month in late-April, early-May.
