The Cardinals belted out 15 hits and 7 runs while Adam Wainwright went 6 solid to help shutout the Mets on Monday night, 7 – 0. The Mets were 0 for 7 with RISP and Jeff McNeil seemed to come up short in every chance he had to contribute to the game. McNeil is now down to .169 with RISP this season continuing to struggle in big moments.
Rich Hill gave up the first 3 runs through 5 IP, and Yennsy Diaz got lit up the 8th allowing the other 4 runs in a nice, steady rainfall in Flushing. The Mets bottom 6 of the order came up with only 1 hit in the loss on Monday night, and that leaves the Mets further out of the playoff picture.
In fact, the Cardinals put themselves to find their way to the post-season with Monday’s win, so a game 2 victory would be huge for the Red Birds… and for us at bettors +150!
St. Louis Cardinals
Move within a half of a game of the wildcard position in the NL standings with their 7 – 0 win in game 1 of this series at Citi Field. Using the aid of a 4-run 8th inning in the New York rain, the Cardinals also got a huge start from Adam Wainwright. The Cards bats were hot all night breaking out for 15 hits and Wainwright only surrendered 4 hits striking out 4 en route to his 16th win of 2021.
Wainwright and Molina were making their 302nd start together on Monda night, and the two of them had the Mets lineup in check all night. Molina contributed with his bat as well, going 3 for 5 while scoring twice.
Nolan Arenado knocked in another run as his quest to hit the century mark continues. Matty Holliday was the last Card to drive in 100 runs and Arenado should have it done over the next couple of games (96).
Harrison Bader also came up big on Monday with 3 hits in 4 AB. I mention this because he had only 8 hits in his previous 8 games going into Monday’s game 1 of this series in New York. Some people like these lights in the Big Apple when they are bright and shiny! Do you think it has anything to do with him being from Bronxville, NY? He grew up practically hearing the Bronx crowd from his doorstep without even going to the game, so he knows Yankee Stadium and made it known on Monday that he was back home.
Jake Woodford gets the nod on Tuesday for the Red Birds with his 2 – 3 record and 4.28 ERA on the season. Of course, we all know most of those stats have come from efforts out of the bullpen as he only has 1 win as a starter and has only pitched 2 innings against the Mets in 2021. That appearance came out of the bullpen in May
NY Mets
Isn’t it hysterical that everyone thought the Mets taking 2 of 3 over the Yankees would lead to a win Mets win tonight and Yankee loss to Minnesota too? Yeah, not so much because that is not how hangovers work.
The Mets used the same starting 8 4 nights in a row going into Monday night and Rios hoped it would keep the team rolling after taking the Subway series. The Mets did not use it as momentum to start the week, however, and yet tonight they are heavy favorites.
Shutout for the 12th time this season, the Mets barely scratched out 4 hits and no one could come through in a clutch spot on Monday night. Jeff McNeil continues to be a letdown when the moments seem bigger, as he was 0 – 2 with men in scoring position unable to do simple things that contribute to a team win.
Lindor was not hitting 3 HR again, and that was amazing to see that he was the first Met or Yankee to hit 3 bombs in one game between the two teams in 25 years on Interleague play.
Nido comes off the DL today, so we might expect the Mets to put him in the lineup today against Woodford.
Marcus Stroman was stellar his last time out against Miami, giving up 1 ER allowing only 4 hits while knocking down 7 and walking none. With that effort, Stroman has his ERA down to 2.87 and his 9 – 12 record is certainly deceiving. Some would consider him their ace when #48 is out of the rotation as deGrom is at the moment. Stroman will need to produce a big effort again because another loss to St. Louis is double-costly being that these teams are fighting for the same spot in the playoffs.
