A NL Central weekend showdown will start on Thursday between the St. Louis Cardinals and the Milwaukee Brewers.
St. Louis Cardinals
This St. Louis team is proving they can thump at the plate. But then again, they’ve only run into the Kansas City Royals once and Pittsburgh Pirates the other three times. Smacking those pitches is a completely different ballgame than staring down two-time MLB All-Star pitcher Brandon Woodruff on the road and the rest of the Brewers rotation.
The return of Albert Pujols to St. Louis has garnered much attention; however, it is their acquisition from last offseason that has gotten off to the hottest start. Nolan Arenado is hitting .438 with three homers and nine RBIs through four games.
However, the confidence is flowing right now for the Cardinals with the team averaging the most home runs per game in MLB. They’re flashing a .271 batting average and .874 OPS on the season so far, along with the second-most runs (6.25) per game.
The ageless wonder Adam Wainwright is scheduled to start the opener of this series. He went 2-1 against the Brewers in these head-to-head matchups last season. In 27.1 innings on the rubber, he yielded 29 hits and 11 earned runs, culminating in a 3.62 ERA on the season.
Milwaukee Brewers
Milwaukee has not had a strong start to their season offensively. They’ve already been shut out twice this season in meetings with the Baltimore Orioles and Chicago Cubs. Granted, they started to get their act together in their last two wins over the Orioles, but now, they’ll have to deal with the 40-and-strong arm of Adam Wainwright.
Brandon Woodruff will be on the mound facing the rival Cardinals for a four-game weekend series. Woodruff certainly hopes things get better considering he finished last season 0-2 with a 3.97 ERA against the Cardinals. He gave up 20 hits and 10 earned runs in 22.2 innings on the mound, while also compiling 27 strikeouts.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
- Cardinals O/U are 3-0-1 this season
- Cardinals are 3-1 ATS this season
- Brewers O/U are 2-2-2 this season
- Brewers are 3-3 ATS this season
St. Louis Cardinals vs. Milwaukee Brewers MLB Prediction:
This is the perfect opportunity for Brandon Woodruff to dust himself off after getting torched by the Chicago Cubs’ bats in his regular-season debut. He’s had some time to chew on that ugly performance while awaiting his turn in the rotation.
What better chance for a bounce-back game than a home-opener against a division rival?
Woodruff has the arm to pitch their offense into trouble, and the bats for the Brewers will be persistent enough to eke out the runs needed in the later innings, when Adam Wainwright finally steps down from the mound.
I’m taking the Brewers on Thursday.
