St. Louis has jumped into second place in the NL Central but they are still nowhere near the leading Cubbies.
This is one of the great rivalries in baseball so hopefully we get a good series but the way Chicago is playing you never know.
Some intrigue for the opener with John Lackey taking on his former team. Maybe St. Louis can start bridging the gap against a guy they are familiar with.
St. Louis Cardinals
The Cards are hardly tearing it up this season but they have moved up the division standings of late and are above .500. Still a Wild Card berth looks like their regular season ceiling.
They have been going through an inter-league jaunt and it has not been going well. Even though it is a trip to Chicago they may be happy to return to the NL. Surprisingly they are third in MLB in scoring.
Jaime Garcia has been solid but unspectacular this season, nowhere near effective as he was a year agi when he had an ERA under 2.50. He is more moxie than stuff which means he really has to be on his game to win.
He is 0-1 against the Cubs this season but was very good in that start.
The bullpen has not been as sharp this season as in years past.
Chicago Cubs
Chicago might not set any records this season but they are so far ahead they are likely to be looking for challenges along the way and St. Louis coming to town is a natural one.
They still own the Majors best ERA and are second in runs scored.
This is a team that is hard not to like. They are just so balanced in their lineup and in the rotation.
Jake Arrieta is in a league of his own but you can argue that John Lackey has been as good as any other pitcher for Chicago this year. In his last nine starts he has not yielded more than 3ER in any of them.
He is on pace to be much better than was even a year ago in his renaissance season with STL. He has been great against the Cards this season but Chicago is just 1-1 in those starts.

As good as the Cubs have been they have only netted less than three units with Lackey on the hill this season.
They have a 9-4 record in those games but you are not getting a ton of value with him.
All but one of his starts he has been -190 or worse.

Garcia doesn’t scare me. I wish it weren’t so but the best way to make money off the Cubs is the run line, they are an amazing 40-26 against it this season.
Otherwise you are getting pennies on the dollar which is too much risk.
