Two teams that were swept in their opening series get set for battle on Friday as the Atlanta Braves and St. Louis Cardinals go at it.
The Cardinals were swept away in Pittsburgh while the Braves couldn’t handle the Nationals in a short 2 game set at home.
Atlanta Braves
The Braves don’t have much to build off of this season and it really showed through their first two games of the season. Atlanta has started 0-2 after dropping back to back games to the Nationals in Atlanta.
The Braves offense struggled against the top 2 pitchers for the Nats as Max Scherzer and Stephen Strasburg both shut them down. Atlanta put up a 3 spot in the opener and then followed that up with just 1 run in a 3-1 defeat.
The Braves will send Matt Wisler to the hill here in the 3rd game of the season.
Wisler appeared in 20 games (19 starts) and finished 2015 with a record of 8-8. His ERA was a major concern as it sat a 4.71 as he simply couldn’t find consistency throughout last season.
St. Louis Cardinals
The Cardinals got the message that last year won’t be anywhere close to as easy as this year is going to be in terms of the division. The Cardinals were swept away and mostly dominated in Pittsburgh in the opening series.
They managed performances of just 1 and 2 runs with a 5 run performance, that turned out to be a loss, mixed in there.
The Cards top of the rotation has to be concern going forward as although it was just 1 start each, none of them looked like they had dominating stuff.
St. Louis will go with Jamie Garcia here to try and stop the losing streak. In 2015, Garcia finished 10-6 last season as he started 20 games for the Cards. The RH posted just a 2.43 ERA, which was one of the best on the team.
Garcia is such a crucial part of this rotation as he really carries the bottom the rotation and played stopper plenty of times for this team.
