The slumping San Diego Padres hope to avoid a third straight series loss as they welcome an NL West rival to town. The San Francisco Giants will look to make up some ground in the division with a four-game road stand at Petco Park.
The Padres won it in the 10th on pinch-hitter Jorge Alfaro’s bases-loaded single, giving San Diego a series opening win at 2-1.
San Francisco Giants
If there was ever a perfect time for the Giants to upset the Padres, it would be in Thursday night’s opener. The Padres just got swept by the Seattle Mariners after losing three of their four games on the road against the Los Angeles Dodgers. They even split even with the Arizona Diamondbacks prior to those two series meetings.
San Francisco’s pitchers are constantly being pounded at the plate. Their pitchers have a combined 4.27 ERA on the road, and opposing teams are slashing .244/.303/.400 against them.
Speaking of defense, Logan Webb (3.13 ERA) is slated to start at pitcher for San Francisco in the opener. He was handed his third loss of the season in his last outing against the Chicago White Sox. So he’ll be looking to get back on the winning track and set things right for the lowly Giants.
San Diego Padres
A rough stretch, highlighted by a road trip closing out in Los Angeles, has seen the Padres fall slightly back in the NL West standings. While once neck-and-neck with the Dodgers, their losing record over the last ten games still has them steadily in second place, though grabbing a series win against the Giants could help shift momentum and confidence back into the right direction.
The Padres have seen their offensive production take a slight step back this season, though they still have a handful of players who can make opposing pitchers pay on any given night. They rank in the top half of baseball in runs scored per nine innings and strikeouts, though it has been the low home run numbers that have held them back on nights where they struggle to get much going on the scoreboard.
Much like their opponent, the Padres have had quite a few injuries they’ve been aiming to navigate. Fernando Tatis Jr. (wrist) is the most notable absence, though hasn’t appeared in a game all season. Will Myers (knee) also remains out, further depleting the power in the lineup, while they’ll be without three relievers and three starters as well.
In Tatis Jr.’s absence, Manny Machado (.326 average, 12 HRs, 46 RBI, .397 OBP) has taken the lead across nearly every offensive category.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:

San Francisco Giants vs. San Diego Padres MLB Prediction:
San Francisco has been struggling this season but they played San Diego into extras in game one and will be looking for a win on Friday.
San Diego has lost the last eight starts by Blake Snell as he no longer looks like the dominant force he was.
Give me the Giants to win a close one.
