The Giants have built themselves a solid lead in the NL West proving once again that there is something to that whole even year thing. Meanwhile their brothers across the bay are looking for any kind of magic that might make them more competitive.
The only thing keeping them out of last place in the AL West is that L.A. is even more hapless than they are.
San Francisco Giants
The Giants will be looking for some revenge this week after losing the first two games of this split 4 gamer at home.
This is one of the most efficient teams out there.
They have few stars and nobody has blown up this season but they are able to find a hero most nights to win at a high level. They are missing a couple of key cogs with Hunter Pence out of the lineup til maybe August and Joe Panik out with a concussion.
The lone star they have is MadBum. He is making headlines with the HR derby stuff but that is overshadowing the fact that he has been awesome on the mound too.
He has an ERA of 1.99 at the moment and before last game has a streak of 12 straight starts with 2ER or less. The bullpen is not the best in the league but when Bumgarner starts they are less of a factor.
Oakland Athletics
Oakland has won five of six games heading into Wednesday night action but that is not really enough to think they are going to turn around their season.
Their offense, featuring acquisition Khris Davis is in the bottom half of the league but at least they are getting what they want from KD. He leads the team with 19 homers.
The rest of the group does not strike any fear.
On the mound they are scrambling for answers as Sonny Gray has not been himself. This will be just teh second MLB start for Dillon Overton. He might be 1-0 but the three homers he gave up to the Angels in 5 innings is not a great indicator.
Still there could be some advantage in the Giants not having much of a book to go on. The Oakland bullpen is pretty nondescript. The good arms they have could easily be trade bait.

Overton, making his second start and first at home is the wild card. The San Francisco lineup is good but it can be subdued. I can certainly see getting down on a home run play with Oakland. The payoff will be really good.
