Opening night got off to a fast start with the Yankees vs Nationals and Giants vs Dodgers double header. It started with disappointing news as ace Clayton Kershaw was pulled from the matchup.
With that being said, that was the only thing that went wrong for the Dodgers last night. It took a little time, but their bats eventually became too much for the Giants in the 7th. They won 8-1.
San Francisco Giants
It is rebuilding time for the Giants in San Francisco. It has been some time since their dominant run of multiple World Series victories. Some of the veterans from those teams are still there, but they are in much need of some new talent.
Bruce Bochy retired, making way for their new manager Gabe Kapler. He will be paving a new path in San Francisco, hoping for some prospects to pan out.
They lost their biggest star in the offseason in Madison Bumgarner, who is know with the Arizona Diamondbacks. They also lost their closer last season and haven’t really replaced him. Several sports need to be filled in the bullpen.
The pitching rotation is far from impressive, especially going against teams like the Dodgers in the NL. They won’t benefit from the new universal DH rule, adding another bat in their opponents lineup.
Los Angeles Dodgers
The Dodgers are the team to beat in 2020. If it wasn’t clear before, they made a statement on opening night with a solid 8-1 win.
It was disappointing news hearing that Clayton Kershaw couldn’t start on Opening Day, but their offense took care of business. Hopefully, the back tightness he experienced is a short term issue.
Their lineup is dangerous from top to bottom. They now even get to add another bat to the lineup with the universal DH, and like mentioned, bad for teams like the Giants.
Mookie Betts received a nice, fat extension before he even played his first game in Los Angeles. They are set up for the next few years to get over the hump and win a World Series. They have been knocking on the door for years, but this team could break that barrier.
