The Giants are looking good to be a factor in an even year yet again even though I am not so sure how they are able to win at such a high rate when their dueling aces are not on the mound.
Boston has a different approach, they have been bludgeoning opponents all season long.
Recent additions have been made with the hope of Boston has just enough pitching to be a strong contender all season long.
San Francisco Giants
San Francisco has come out of the All-Star break cold. They got swept at San Diego and Boston is next on the trip before they head to New York to face the Yankees.
Even with the sweep the Giants have still been a great bet on the road, thanks to a 28-19 record.
This is a balanced team and I am interested to see how they upgrade to push themselves to the finish line once again.
I used to be a big Matt Cain fan, feeling that he never got his due playing second fiddle to Tim Lincecum.
Now he is a shell of what he used to be though. He is making this start coming off the 15 day DL. I think you have to be worried about him against a strong hitting team in a really good hitters park.
The bullpen has been good but it could be better. Mostly they are hoping that Cain can get them 6 innings.
Boston Red Sox
The Red Sox are certainly going for it in Big Papi’s swan song.
They have made moves to upgrade the lineup, the rotation and the bullpen and I think they might even have one more move left in them. The offense looks pretty great.
They are tops in runs, batting average and OPS.
I believe in their lineup but you have wonder if there is some give back there due to the fact that some of the guys producing the offense are doing so for the first time – Papi being the exception.
Drew Pomeranz has been their lone upgrade to a rotation that is desperate for an upgrade. This will be his first start for the Red Sox and he gets a familiar opponent in San Francisco.
He has faced them three times this season while with San Diego and the Padres lost all three – though he has generally pitched well.
I am curious to see how he handles facing the Jays and Orioles, the other big offenses in the AL East.

I am no expert on the psyche of Drew Pomeranz but assuming he is under control I like him to show why he might be the key to a Red Sox pennant run.
Against a team like SF he does not have to be too concerned about mastering the Monster right away.

If the Sox are not good value on the ML then go for the run line. They have the better bullpen and even if their starter falters a little their lineup should so some damage against Cain. You can go either way.
