The Blue Jays will feature newly acquired Melvin Upton Jr. on their roster to face his former team, the San Diego Padres, just a day after being dealt.
San Diego Padres
The Padres are in the midst of a miserable season, hence the rebuilding process already being underway. They’ve sent the veteran outfielder.
Upton, to the Jays for their stretch run, and previously jettisoned their best starter, Drew Pomeranz, to the Jays’ AL East rivals in Boston. Expect to see Andrew Cashner, amongst others, dealt by the deadline as well.
Luis Perdomo is having a tough rookie year, recording a 6.93 ERA and 1.84 WHIP this year.
His numbers put him near the bottom amongst starting pitchers, but the Padres really have nothing to lose running the 23 year-old out there to gain MLB experience as they aren’t anywhere near contending.
Toronto Blue Jays
As mentioned, the Blue Jays are in a tight battle with the Red Sox for second place in the division, with both trailing the Orioles by less than 3 games.
The Sox are 2.5 games back and the Jays are 3 back, while both are trying to acquire pieces in effort for a deep playoff run.
Marco Estrada has completely redefined his value as a very good starting pitcher in his time with Toronto.
Since being acquired from Milwaukee before 2015, Estrada owns a 3.06 ERA and about a 1.03 WHIP.
He looks like a steal in that trade, and should continue to roll against the weak Padres’ lineup.
