Thanks the to the Cubs recent struggles the Cardinals are more alive than we would have expected a month ago, they just never seem to take a season off.
That is definitely not the case for San Diego which has been among the early sellers of this season.
They are desperately searching for the right mix, sorry maybe that should have read indefinitely.
San Diego Padres
Quietly Wil Myers is finally living up to his potential. The young slugger who has been traded twice is leading the club with 20 homers.
That’s already a career high, at 26 he might finally be the middle of the order bat this team needs.
The key thing is that he has been able to avoid significant injuries. San Diego is the perfect place to avoid those minor aches and pains.
Drew Pomeranz has been dealt already so now the focus is on what the Padres will do with Andrew Cashner. A couple of seasons ago it looked like Cashner was going to peak but now it looks like he is just a back of the rotation guy.
He has been hot and cold this season and disaster away from PetCo Park.
Those kinds of splits may be why he has not been dealt already. People are not sure what they are really getting.
St. Louis Cardinals
As this is being written on Tuesday the Cards are still eight games behind the Cubs.
That is a significant gap but it is better than it was a month ago. St. Louis remains second in the Majors in scoring but I wonder if that is a level they can maintain.
STL may be the best at getting the most out of players when they first come up but it has been a while since they have developed a hitter who has lad long term batting success.
Guys tend to fizzle out.
Jaime Garcia has not been as sharp as he was a year ago but I think that is to be expected.
The promise he showed as a rookie when he won 13 games has yet to be realized with any consistency.
It is concerning that he is giving up more homers than he has ever before and putting on a lot of base runners – a dangerous combination.
The bullpen has not been as locked in as we have come expect either.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
- Over is 6-2-2 in Cashners last 10 Wed. starts.
- SD are 3-7 in Cashners last 10 Wed. starts.
- Under is 12-5-1 in STL last 18 home games.
- STL are 8-2 in Garcias last 10 Wed. starts.
- Under is 16-5-2 in Garcias last 23 home starts.
Free San Diego Padres vs. St. Louis Cardinals MLB Prediction:
The Padres are going to be a tough team to back down the stretch. Almost anyone but Myers could be dealt over the next two weeks and once you are out of the race performances can be tough to predict. Cashner has not been sharp this season and his future might be weighing on him.
St. Louis is definitely in better form and with a lot more to play for at the moment. Given their offensive prowess and the mound matchup getting sharp on the total might be the way to go.
4* Free MLB Betting Pick: Over
I see this total peaking at 9 as San Diego is hardly an offensive power. If the the total is below 10 than I think you can get this number pretty comfortably.
MLB Free Score Prediction: St. Louis 7 – San Diego 4
