The Padres will be on the road to take on the Cardinals on Monday, May 30th.
Nick Martinez will be opposed by Packy Naughton in this one.
St. Louis is a small favorite with the total set at 8.5.
San Diego Padres
The Padres continue to play very good baseball. They have been one of the more impressive teams in the league so far and that will likely continue as the year goes on.
The way this team is playing is frankly how they should be. When they have got their guys clicking, the team they have is a very dangerous one.
For as well as they have played, they still miss and need Fernando Tatis. Whenever one of the best players in the league is sidelined, that club should always want him back out there.
When I look at San Diego, I see a team that is very balanced. That is always crucial because it is not good enough to just be good on one side of the field.
A lot of people might think of the offense for this team first but their pitching has also been solid. They could certainly get better in that area but I have liked what I have seen from there.
Despite how well the Padres have played this season, so have the Dodgers and it does not appear as if they will be going anywhere. Los Angeles currently leads them by 3 games so I do not expect the Padres to take any game off.
This series with St. Louis will certainly be a good test for this group. I would give the edge to the Friars but facing this Cardinals team is never easy.
Nick Martinez will be on the mound for the opener of the series. Thus far, he has had mixed results with a 2-2 record and 3.86 ERA.
St. Louis Cardinals
I would say that the Cardinals have been solid this season. They have not stood off the page but they have still been impressive.
In terms of the National League, there are certainly more teams that get attention and that makes sense. The Mets, Dodgers, etc., do have more talent and are true contenders.
To me, St. Louis is not in the upper tier of teams in the NL yet. If they were able to really bolster their roster, then I might put them there but I feel they are certainly a level below that.
If I was the Cardinals, I would do whatever it is I could do to acquire some proven hitters in the lineup and a rotation piece/reliever. Again, what they have now is fine but I do not see it getting them over the top.
With the team they have now, I do see them as a playoff team but not one that makes a deep run. It would be hard for me to envision them taking down a top team in a series.
Coming into this game, the Cards have a record of 26-21 and they are 2nd in the NL Central. In terms of their division, I would still give the edge to the Brewers just because I feel they are more complete and are a better fit for the 162 game slate.
Speaking of the Brewers, they just split a four-game series with them in their last series. After winning game 2&3, St. Louis got blanked 8-0 on Sunday. I get that their opponent is a very good team but it is not acceptable to not score any runs and lose by that margin to them.
In the loss on Sunday, Miles Mikolas was not very sharp, as he went 5.2 innings and allowed 6 earned runs. Now, Packy Naughton will get the ball for the first game of this series and he is 0-1 with an ERA of 2.89.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
- The Padres are 6-0 in their last 6 road games vs. a left-handed starter.
- The Padres are 12-2 in their last 14 during game 1 of a series.
- The Cardinals are 6-2 in their last 8 games on grass.
- The Cardinals are 36-16 in their last 52 Monday games.
San Diego Padres vs. St. Louis Cardinals MLB Prediction:
The Padres have been playing some good baseball as of late and I do not see that ending in this game.
With Naughton on the mound for St. Louis, it is important that San Diego takes advantage of that. With their lineup, I would expect them to get to him and their pen.
I would expect the Cardinals to be in this game but I do not see them getting it done in the end. San Diego is just the better team and I feel they will put that on display here.
