By all rights the Pirates should be out of the race but as this is being written they are just 1.5 games out of the second Wild Card spot in the NL. Still lots of time too.
That time thing is what is ailing San Francisco. The more of it there is the more they give away their lead over the Dodgers in the West.
Its down to just a game.
Pittsburgh Pirates
Per the intro the Pirates are hanging in there but it is also that none of the Wild Card teams are really tearing it up right now.
They did take two of three from the Dodgers over the weekend and that was without Starling Marte in the lineup – he has been their best hitter all season long but you probably didn’t notice.

I guess this Bucs group has something.
I don’t know they can sustain it.
Jameson Taillon has only made 10 starts this season but they have been mostly good, only twice has he given up more than 3ER and none in his last six starts.
He might be finally rounding into the form that could make him a solid number 2 behind Gerritt Cole.
Though I would like to see more dominance. His control is impressive 47/8 K/BB ratio.
San Francisco Giants
The Giants have been struggling for weeks, unable to put away the Dodgers in the NL West.
For a while they were waiting for health to get on their side with the like of Hunter Pence and Joe Panik on the shelf but that was short lived – now top hitter Buster Posey is dealing with back stiffness.
The pitching has been good but they have been shutout twice in the last week and won one game 1-0.
They need more offense.
Jeff Samardzija is not quite earning his keep this season.
A return to the NL, especially in the West should have improved his numbers but he has been very inconsistent, or consistently mediocre, take your pick.

He may have thrown five shutout inning in his last outing but the four before that were all either 4ER or 5ER allowed.
He is not giving up a ton of hits but he is prone to big innings.
The bullpen has been just OK in support.

They don’t know from game to game so the value is probably with the dog and the better payoff.
