After the Pirates won 6 of 7 meetings between these two teams last season, the Giants took 3 of 4 from the Pirates in Pittsburgh near the end of June.
Both teams are fighting for playoff position now as the Giants divisional lead has been trimmed to just one game as the Dodgers have caught fire.
The Cubs are running away with the NL Central so the Pirates are just fighting for a Wild Card spot.
Pittsburgh Pirates
Starling Marte left Saturday’s game with back tightness and missed Sunday’s game because of it. Marte has arguably been the Pirates most valuable player this season and his absence/presence in the lineup is a big factor in the outcome of this game.
I would assume given Marte’s style of play, the Pirates will hold him out until the back is fully healthy.
The Pirates will send Ryan Vogelsong to the mound who has been sharp in his last two starts. Vogelsong has returned from a fractured eye socket and will now be returning to San Francisco for this start.
The emotions should be high for Vogelsong as he is returning to the city that he won two championships in.
But, Vogelsong’s comeback from a potentially career-ending injury has certainly inspired himself and could be the inspiration that the Pirates need to make a run.
San Francisco Giants
Like the Pirates, the Giants could be without their star in Buster Posey who sat out Sunday due to back tightness.
If he is out of the lineup, the Giants not only lose an important bat in their lineup but also one who caught Vogelsong for years and is very familiar with his pitching repertoire.
Recently acquired Matt Moore will get the start for the Giants and he will look to stabilize a once dominant but now wavering Giants pitching rotation.
His starts with San Francisco have produced nearly identical pitching lines (6 IP, 3 H, 2 ER and 7 K in each). However, Moore failed to pick up a win in either.
And, he surrendered 11 BBs combined in the two starts.
If his control is off again, the Pirates could use their speed on the base paths to set up run producing situations.
Despite being the home team pitcher, Moore will be the least comfortable in the ballpark of the pitching matchup.
