The Pittsburgh Pirates will travel to the West Coast to take on the San Diego Padres for a 3 game weekday series. The Pirates are 4th in the NL Central while San Diego sits in 3rd place in the NL West.
The Pirates are 4-6 in their last 10 games while the Padres are 6-4 in their last 10 games. Pittsburgh enters after being dealt a 3 game sweep at home by the Cardinals while San Diego just won 2 of 3 at home against San Francisco.
This will be the second series between these two sides in less than a months time. They met back in Pittsburgh between April 12-15th for a 4 game stand. It was an even series as each side took 2 games and the run total finished 19-19 in the Padres favor.
Pittsburgh Pirates
Pittsburgh enters this series after being dealt a home 3 game sweep courtesy of the St. Louis Cardinals. They were outscored in a lopsided 22-8 differential.
Carlos Martínez pitched eight marvelous innings and only allowed five Pirate hits in the win. Harrison Bader hit an early three-run homer in the top of the 2nd inning which proved to be the only offense in the 3-0 game.
Pittsburgh is 19th in the league in batting average with a .228 overall but is 29th in HR’s as the team as only managed to hit 20. It’s no surprise that the Pirates are also 28th in slugging percentage at .357.
San Diego Padres
San Diego enters this series after winning 2 of the 3 games at home against the NL West leading San Francisco Giants. They lose the day game finale on Sunday in a lopsided 1-7 final.
After Fernando Tatis Jr. gave the Padres a 1-0 lead in the first inning with his eighth home run of the season, the Giants scored four runs in the third and two in the fifth against Musgrove. He had only allowed a total of five runs in his first five starts all together with the Padres.
The offense has been led by the big bats of Tatis Jr. and Eric Hosmer, who have teamed up to be one of the most dangerous duos in the league. Tatis Jr. leads the team with eight home runs while Hosmer is leading in nearly every other offensive statistic. He has team highs with a .302 AVG, .375 OBP, 17 RBI, and 32 hits.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
- Pirates are 12-15 overall
- Pirates are 7-8 on the road
- Padres are 16-13 overall
- Padres are 7-9 at home
Free Pittsburgh Pirates vs. San Diego Padres MLB Prediction:
These teams met a couple of weeks ago in Pittsburgh with the teams splitting the 4 game series. Neither team is sending out one of their better pitchers in this one so there isn’t much of an edge in the pitching department.
That being said you have to take this game from a face value and that is the Padres being the better team. They are also coming in winning 3 of their last 4 games while the Pirates were just swept at home.
I’ll take San Diego win the series opener at home Monday.
