Pirates vs. White Sox Gameday
Pittsburgh enters Thursday’s series finale at Rate Field with plenty of momentum. The Pirates are back at .500 at 73-73 after winning the first two games against Chicago, and they’ve now captured five consecutive series. The White Sox have slipped to 75-70 but remain atop the AL Central.
Pittsburgh has outscored Chicago 13-5 through the first two games of this series.
The Pirates opened the series with an 18-hit attack in Tuesday’s 9-3 victory. Wednesday looked completely different, as Pittsburgh used eight pitchers and broke a 1-1 tie with three runs in the seventh on the way to a 4-2 win.
Chicago is trying to avoid a sweep after dropping two straight at home. First pitch is scheduled for 7:40 PM ET on CHSN and SportsNet Pittsburgh.

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Chicago White Sox Odds & Last 5
There isn’t much separating these teams in the betting market. Pittsburgh and Chicago are both sitting around -110 on the moneyline, while the Pirates are roughly +155 to +165 laying 1.5 runs.
The total is sitting at 7.5 at most traditional books.
Pittsburgh has won four of its last five games, with three of those contests finishing with six runs or fewer. The exception was Tuesday’s series opener, when the Pirates jumped on Sean Burke for seven runs in 1 1/3 innings and cruised to a 9-3 victory.
Chicago has dropped three of its last five after winning Sunday’s series finale against Minnesota 10-1. The White Sox scored only two runs Wednesday despite creating several opportunities, finishing 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position.
White Sox Stats
Chicago remains in first place in the AL Central despite consecutive losses to Pittsburgh. The offense has lacked consistency recently, but the White Sox still have enough power in the middle of the lineup to change a game quickly.
Munetaka Murakami supplied their biggest swing Wednesday, hitting his 31st home run of the season. Colson Montgomery has also reached 31 homers, giving Chicago a pair of dangerous left-handed power bats.
The White Sox haven’t cashed enough of their opportunities in this series.
Chicago put runners aboard against Pittsburgh’s parade of relievers Wednesday but repeatedly came up empty in scoring situations. The White Sox grounded into three double plays and stranded seven runners, making a competitive game feel more frustrating than the final margin suggests.
The pitching staff kept them close in Game 2. Davis Martin allowed only one run over five innings before Sean Newcomb surrendered Pittsburgh’s three-run seventh, turning a 1-1 game into a 4-1 deficit.

Pirates Stats
Pittsburgh’s offense has become much more productive during its late-season push. The Pirates collected 18 hits Tuesday, with every starter recording at least one and seven players finishing with multiple hits.
That lineup didn’t need another offensive explosion Wednesday.
Konnor Griffin delivered the biggest hit in Game 2, driving home two runs with a seventh-inning single. Esmerlyn Valdez homered earlier, while Bryan Reynolds doubled and scored during the decisive rally.
Brandon Lowe remains Pittsburgh’s season leader with 29 home runs and 83 RBI. Nick Gonzales has supplied consistent contact around him, batting .305, while Spencer Horwitz drove in three runs during Tuesday’s series-opening victory.
The Pirates have also received better pitching during their surge. Wednesday’s bullpen game was an extreme example, with eight pitchers combining to hold Chicago to two runs. Brandon Eisert was particularly effective, retiring all seven batters he faced and striking out five.

Pirates vs. White Sox Pitching Matchup
Jared Jones gets the start for Pittsburgh with a 3-6 record, 4.46 ERA and 1.23 WHIP. He has struck out 92 batters in 78 2/3 innings and enters Thursday coming off an excellent performance.
Jones was dominant against the Angels in his last start, throwing six scoreless innings in a 1-0 victory. He allowed only three hits and one walk while striking out nine, snapping a seven-start winless streak.
Hagen Smith is set to work for Chicago after an impressive relief stretch.
The rookie left-hander threw three perfect innings against Minnesota on Sunday, striking out four. It marked his ninth scoreless appearance in his previous 10 outings, and Chicago has continued to manage his workload carefully late in the season.
Smith brings a different look from the right-handers Pittsburgh saw in the first two games. His ability to generate strikeouts could help Chicago slow a Pirates lineup that has been producing more consistently during its recent run.
Jones has the more traditional starter workload, while Smith’s usage gives Chicago less certainty about how many innings he’ll cover. That puts additional importance on both bullpens in the series finale.
Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Chicago White Sox bottom line: Pittsburgh brings the hotter overall form, while Chicago needs Smith and its bullpen to contain a Pirates lineup looking to complete the road sweep.
Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Chicago White Sox Baseball Betting Trends
- The White Sox are 2-3 straight-up in their last 5 games.
- Also, the White Sox have hit the over in 3 of their last 5 games.
- The Pirates are 4-1 straight-up in their last 5 games.
- The Pirates have covered the run line in 3 of their last 5 games.

Pirates White Sox Free Pick: Under 7.5
Here is my Pirates White Sox free pick: I’m playing Under 7.5. Pittsburgh has won the first two games of this series, but Wednesday’s 4-2 result is closer to the type of game I expect in the finale.
Jared Jones is coming off his best start in weeks. He shut out the Angels for six innings, allowing three hits and one walk while striking out nine.
That’s the version of Jones I want behind an Under ticket.
Jones has allowed only five earned runs across his last three starts covering 14 2/3 innings.
Hagen Smith gets the other side after throwing three perfect innings with four strikeouts against Minnesota on Sunday. Chicago has handled him carefully, but his ability to miss bats gives the White Sox a useful weapon against a Pittsburgh lineup that exploded Tuesday before cooling off Wednesday.
The bigger concern is Pittsburgh’s bullpen after using eight pitchers in Game 2. Still, the Pirates got 6 1/3 scoreless relief innings Wednesday, and Jones can reduce that workload if he carries his recent form deeper into this one.
Chicago has scored five runs in the series and went just 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position Wednesday.
I’m expecting fewer clean scoring chances than we saw Tuesday. I’ll play Under 7.5.
