The Pittsburgh Pirates have been surprisingly decent for a team who was touted as possibly being the worst in all the majors this past offseason, but they have come back down to Earth lately only picking up one win in their last seven games.
The batting unit remains the rough point for this team, as they rank towards the bottom in statistics like batting average and on base percentage, as they really struggle most with batting depth with most of the offensive production needing to come from the very top of the order.
The Pirates have a laundry list of injuries right now, so it is interesting to wonder where they would be if they were able to stay somewhat healthy, as this roster appears to be better when healthy then maybe even the Pirates thought. One of the big injuries early on was the loss of Ke’Bryan Hayes who looked great early on and who looked like he could have provided plenty of offense at the top of this order.
The Pirates will send Trevor Cahill to the mound who has had a rough time of it early on here in 2021 coming into this game with an ERA in excess of 7, but he has shown flashes here and there so maybe he can put it all together here against a struggling Cubs batting lineup.
Chicago Cubs
A lot of people have had a lot of doubts about this Chicago Cubs team and rightly so given some of their games early on, but a lot of those concerns have been put to bed after this Cubs team was able to pull off a sweep against the LA Dodgers.
They get a little bit of class relief here going from playing the World Series favorites to the Pirates, but they will still need to be on top of their game here, as the Pirates have proven they are no pushovers this season.
This Cubs batting lineup, although they do not have the best overall stats, have now started to come on a bit as of late and the bats were a key reason they were able to sweep the Dodgers scoring 17 runs during that series.
Zach Davies will get the start here, and he is probably happy he gets this start against the Pirates, as he is in desperate need of a quality start, as he has allowed his ERA to balloon over 8 and a date with the Pirates might help him bring that number down.

It is much easier to believe in the Cubs after that last series with the Dodgers, and I am okay with taking them as a slight favorites here to get the job done against the Pirates despite their starting pitcher struggling mightily this year.
