The Pirates are a couple of games over .500 as this is being written and it looks possible they could be a factor in the Wild Card race.
The last couple of seasons this group has been led by pitching but that unit has struggled this season. I think there is enough talent on the squad to be a factor but all through the lineup they have to start playing better.
Not sure what moves they might make over the next couple of weeks.
The Phillies season continues to track as predicted. Nobody believed they could keep up their impressive pace of the first couple of months and that has been borne out.
Offense continues to be the primary struggle as only Atlanta scores fewer runs than the Phillies. Just two regulars are hitting better than .260 and only one player has more than 13 homers.
They would love to deal Ryan Howard if they could but he is hitting just .158.
The Phillies have a young pitching staff. Zach Eflin was called up to the Majors in June and got absolutely hammered in Toronto – 8ER in just 2.2 innings with three homers allowed.
In the ensuing six starts he has not given up more than 3ER including a rare complete game win (yes it was against lowly Atlanta).
Despite his large frame he is a pitch to contact type and is looking like a fairly effective MLB starter.
I am sure I have written this before but I like the offensive potential of this club.
They already have one of the most productive outfields in baseball and that is with Andrew McCutcheon posting his worst batting average in the Majors.
Pittsburgh is definitely in that unenviable spot of mid contention.
They have some pieces that might be interesting to other clubs and will likely be a factor somehow. They would probably be wise to sell as I don’t think they have enough to make a great run.
The pitching has been the problem this season.
Ace Gerrit Cole has had some injuries but when he has been on the mound he has not been near as sharp as when he won 19 games a year ago.
His peripherals are not off by a huge margin so perhaps he is just not in a groove. The bullpen which led the Majors in ERA last season is 11th.
Not terrible but a big reason the margin for error is slim for Pittsburgh this season.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
- Over is 19-7 in PIT last 26 home games.
- Over is 18-7-1 in PIT last 26 Fri. games.
- PIT are 43-19 in their last 62 Fri. games.
- PHI are 3-11 in the last 14 meetings.
Free Philadelphia Phillies vs. Pittsburgh Pirates MLB Prediction:
Philly will definitely be the dog in this one and there could be some really good value. Elfin has proven to be effective but it is still tricky getting comfortable backing the Phillies with that terrible offense.
With Cole on the hill look for Pittsburgh to be a significant favourite in this one. The likely means the only way to get a decent return in this one will be with a run line bet. Not the worst idea in this matchup.
4* Free MLB Betting Pick: Pittsburgh RL
Cole can certainly handle this lineup. Current Phillies are batting just .209 against him with just one extra base hit.
Sounds like a great situational opportunity to get behind him even if he is not peaking just yet.
