Phillies vs. Mets Gameday
The Philadelphia Phillies head into Sunday’s finale at Citi Field at 85-70, still battling for position in a crowded NL Wild Card race. Don Mattingly’s club has dropped two straight after opening this four-game series with a win.
New York is 71-84 and eliminated from postseason contention, but the Mets have found some late-season life with consecutive wins. Andy Green’s club has scored 16 runs in those two victories, which is one way to make meaningless September baseball considerably less meaningless.
The Mets are out of the race, but they’ve become a problem for a team still in it.
New York leads this four-game set 2-1 after winning 6-3 Friday and 10-3 Saturday. The season series is now tied 6-6 entering Sunday’s final meeting.

Philadelphia Phillies vs. New York Mets Odds & Last 5

Phillies vs. Mets Pitching Matchup
Cristopher Sánchez gets the ball for Philadelphia at 17-6 with a 2.93 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 215 strikeouts. Those are ace-level season numbers, although his September form has suddenly become a little more interesting.
Sánchez has allowed 14 earned runs over his last three starts, including five against Washington last time out. That’s hardly enough to erase six months of excellent work, but bettors laying a road price don’t get to pretend it didn’t happen.
Sánchez owns the better season résumé, but September has finally put a few dents in it.
Jonah Tong counters for New York at 2-1 with a 3.43 ERA and 1.19 WHIP. The rookie has only 20 strikeouts in limited major-league work, but his latest start was easily his most encouraging.
Tong tossed six scoreless innings against Baltimore, allowing one walk while striking out six. He doesn’t need to outpitch Sánchez for seven innings Sunday; keeping New York attached to the game would be plenty useful at this price.
Philadelphia Phillies vs. New York Mets bottom line: Philadelphia has more to play for, but the Mets have spent two days reminding them that eliminated teams can still be a royal pain in September.

Here is my Phillies Mets free pick: I’m taking the Mets ML +142 Sunday at Citi Field.
Philadelphia has the better record and the better starter on paper, so the price isn’t a mystery. Cristopher Sánchez has been excellent this season, but he’s also allowed 14 earned runs across his last three starts. That’s enough wobble to interest me in a home dog that’s already grabbed two straight.
New York has scored 16 runs over those two wins, including a 10-run outburst Saturday. The Mets aren’t playing October baseball, but nobody told their lineup to make dinner plans. Dead teams aren’t supposed to hit like this.
Jonah Tong gives me another reason to bite. The rookie is coming off six scoreless innings against Baltimore and has looked sharper lately.
This isn’t a bet on New York being the better baseball team.
It’s a bet on the gap between these clubs being smaller than +142 suggests. Philadelphia has dropped two straight while chasing Wild Card position, and Sánchez hasn’t been automatic lately. If Tong keeps this close through five, that price gets uncomfortable for the favorite.
