The Cubbies have been mortal of late possibly making the Phillies the best good news story in the NL at the moment. Philadelphia would certainly gain some attention if they can have a positive weekend in Chicago. Many are expecting this team to crumble but as long as their pitching holds they have a spot of ramping up their competitive time table.
Philadelphia Phillies
Philadelphia may have taken a slight dip over their last 10 games but they are still a great story as they seek to be a contender in the NL.
You have to think that ultimately their lack of consistent offense does them in but we all know that pitching is the lynch pin of success and thus far they have proven they can provide that.
Maybe Ryan Howard has one more magical summer in that big expensive bat.
Jerad Eickhoff is the only Phillies starter with a losing record but it has not been because he has been pitching terribly.
Sure he may not have the numbers of the others be he should be more like .500 instead of 2-6, so maybe this is a buying opportunity.
He is coming off his best start of the season with seven shutout innings against Atlanta.
Chicago Cubs
There is no reason to panic at Wrigley.
The Cubs have cooled a little but they still enjoy a nice lead in the Central and are the odds on favourite to win it all. They are still the best pitching team in the Majors but the offense has sunk to second.
The thing I like best about their lineup right now is that they are getting production from a lot of sources. Four different players have 30 or more RBIs.
If there is a weak link in the Cubs rotation it is Kyle Hendricks.
His numbers are not as good and he does not work deep into games even when he is on like in his last start where he gave up just 1 ER to the Giants but pitched just five and a third.
He has been a much better pitcher at home this season and is backed by a strong bullpen. Still if you were going to fade the Cubbies it might make sense when he is on the hill.
