With another win on Sunday afternoon, the Mets will open the season with a 4-game sweep of the Nationals as this NL East rivalry continues to grow. The Nationals have pegged 5 Mets to open the season and we’ve already had a bench-clearing event in the second game of the series as a result.
Entering Saturday night’s game, Mets fans were waiting to see if Francisco Lindor’s name would be in the starting lineup after taking a ball to the skull in Friday’s game. Lindor took the field and wore a flap on his helmet at-bat so he ultimately will miss no time from the incident.
The Mets took a 5 – 0 win on Saturday night to now be in a position to sweep this 4-game series as a big effort from newcomer Chris Bassitt really lifted the team.
Saturday Game Review
Can I just say that the addition of Chris Bassitt to the Mets’ starting rotation is quite a pick-up for Buck Showalter? Bassitt has been stellar over the last 3 seasons as only two players have a lower ERA since 2019 in the bigs. Gerrit Cole (2.84) and Shane Bieber (2.92) are the only starters with a better ERA than Bassitt and with de Grom injured his presence will be vital in this Mets rotation this season.
Bassitt threw an impressive 6 innings in Saturday night’s game 3 of the series and his off-speed stuff was a big reason for his success. The former A’s starter ended up throwing 93 pitches striking out 8 Nats and he got some help offensively from a Polar Bear who set a personal milestone.
After Lindor walked to load the bases in the 5th inning, Nationals Manager Dave Martinez has a choice to make it ended up being the wrong one. Joan Adon was making only his second big-leadhue start of his career and when he loaded the bases with 1 out in the 5th Martinez left him in there to work out of his own trouble.
Instead, the Polar Bear ripped his 107th HR of his career which happened to be his first-ever grand slam to clear the bases turning a scoreless game into a 4 – 0 Mets lead. With a coy bat twirl, Pete Alonso barely cleared the wall but gone it was as he became only the third Mets DH to hit a dinger in team history.
Oh, did you see the catch? Man, Victor Robles made a snatch and grab in deep center field that had to win the web-gem of the night. He just took off towards the wall and robbed the Polar Bear of what was potentially a double which would have knocked in a run.
What to Expect?
So far, the 3 Mets starters have combined to pitch 17 innings only allowing a total of 3 runs to start the new campaign. Not too shabby, and Carrasco needs to come out just as strong after his 2021 results. If you recall, he did get back on track as the season went on but Carrasco struggled when he first got back to the field after missing a lot of time.
Now that we know Lindor is fine, the Mets lineup can hit and Nimmo certainly can create a spark at the top. McNeil came down to earth as expected but he did find 5 hits in the first 2 games so he can always catch a little fire. The Polar Bear would rather be at first base and we expect he will be back there today for this game.

I like the Mets at that price, as I see -128 and -130 out there as well. I am not a fan of juice but the Mets will sweep the Nats so we have to drink it once in a while.
