James Paxton will start the game for the Yankees. The former Mariner posted a 15-6 record in 2019, and recorded a 4.02 xFIP and 1.17 WHIP in his 78 innings at Yankee Stadium.
Washington Nationals
The Nationals have begun their World Series Defense 0-1. Scherzer recorded 10 strikeouts but allowed four runs on five hits to pick up the loss.
They’ll look to bounce-back Saturday with a big start from their number-two guy, Stephen Strasburg.
Strasburg, per the usual, had a phenomenal 2019. Pitching at home last season, Strasburg posted a .95 WHIP and a 2.79 xFIP while holding opponents to just a .202 average over 89.2 innings of work. Additionally, he chalked up 11.6 K/9, one of the highest marks in the league.
Free New York Yankees vs. Washington Nationals MLB Prediction: Nationals at EV or plus-money
I think this game is a coin-flip.
The Yankees were right to be favored yesterday, as they’ve performed well against Scherzer in the past. However, the Yankees have never faced Strasburg before. Generally, I believe it takes hitters a few PA’s before they get a feel for a pitcher (especially someone as good as Strasburg).
Additionally, I felt the Nationals were actually getting some solid contact against Gerrit Cole. But nothing was dropping. Washington’s team OPS against LHP’s is about 50 points higher than against RHP’s, so I’m hoping they manage to pick up a few against Paxton on Saturday.
I’m taking the Nationals at anything better than even money.
