The New York Yankees will travel to the Northwest and begin a three-game set with the Seattle Mariners from T-Mobile Park in primetime Monday on the MLB Network. The Mariners stole two of three from the Yankees in the Bronx last week, and they should enter this set confident they can take a few more from the American League leaders.
New York comes into this one as the slight favorites, with the total opening at 7.5. Mariners manager Scott Servais will send second-year stud Logan Gilbert to the bump, while Yankees skipper Aaron Boone will send 10-game winner Jameson Taillon to the mound.
New York Yankees
New York comes into the second-third of their nine-game road stint with a league-best 70-38. The Yankees currently sit atop in the AL East, and they’ve posted a 29-21 record on the road this season. New York is 51-57 against the spread this season, with an over-under record of 54-51-3.
Jameson Taillon will make his 22nd start of the year Monday night. The sixth-year pitcher has posted a 10-2 record, with a 3.96 ERA and 98 strikeouts, but he’s been a bit shaky over his last eight outings, giving up five or more runs in four of those. Taillon home start against Seattle last week didn’t go particularly well, giving up five runs in less than five innings of work.
The Yankees bullpen will surely be called upon for at least three innings of work in this one, as none of Taillon’s last ten starts have gone into the 7th inning. New York’s bullpen has been impressive this season, aside from a few memorable late-game collapses. The Yanks bullpen boast an ERA of 2.90, good for second in the majors.
New York’s AL-best record is a reflection of what they’ve been able to do at the plate this season. The Yankees rank 14th in batting average (.244), but they powerfully rank first in slugging percentage (.444), home runs (185), and runs scored (570).
Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton lead one of the deepest lineups in the league. With Big G spending the past few weeks on the DL, the Yanks have leaned on the Judge for even more production, presence, and stability. Judge leads the league in homers (43), and he’s recorded multiple hits in five of his last eight games.
Seattle Mariners
Seattle enters this home bout with a 58-51 record, going 4-6 over their last ten games. The Mariners currently sit second the AL West, an they’ve posted a 27-23 record at home this season. Seattle is 54-55 against the spread this season, with an over-under record of 49-47-8.
Logan Gilbert is slated to open the series for Seattle, with the possibility of newly-acquired Luis Castillo floating around as well. Gilbert has followed up a solid rookie year with solid numbers this season, posting a 10-4 record, 3.09 ERA and 120 strikeouts.
Like his counterpart Taillon, Gilbert’s start against the Yankees didn’t go well either. The 6’6 right-hander gave up six runs in less than six innings of work, his most in any over his past ten outings, and he’s due to bounce back here at home.
Seattle’s bullpen ranks in the top ten of majors in ERA (3.49), and with Gilbert going no more than six in each of his past twelve starts, they will surely have an effect on this late-night contest.
Seattle has been decent at the plate this season, ranking 13th in on base percentage (.315) and 12th in home runs (121). They get a lot of production from the top of their lineup, which features Ty France and former Reds Jesse Winker & Eugenio Suarez. France will carry a seven-game hit streak into this series. Stud outfielder Julio Rodridguez’ return is on the horizon as well.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
- Mariners are 6-4 in last 10 games vs. American League East.
- Yankees are 5-5 in their last 10 vs. American League West.
- Seattle is 7-3 in their last 10 overall.
- New York is 3-7 in their last 10 overall.
New York Yankees vs. Seattle Mariners MLB Prediction: NYY/SEA to go Over
Seattle will be really appealing as underdogs here, welcoming a slumping Yankees team that need Giancarlo Stanton back sooner than later. With Gerrit Cole set to go in game two, the opener may be the Mariners best crack to hand the Yankees their sixth straight loss. Considering how due the Bronx Bombers are for a win, the over feels like a safer bet here. Both pitchers have been quietly shaky despite their records, and they both struggled in their respective starts against these lineups.
Take the over for this potential playoff bout, but be sure to give Seattle’s plus ML a look as well.
