The New York Yankees, currently second in the AL East at 80-61, continue their road series against the San Diego Padres at Petco Park. Here is my Yankees Padres free pick: San Diego on the moneyline is my play after Friday’s 3-2 extra-inning win, and this time the matchup is Carlos Rodón against Robbie Ray. I like the Padres at home.
Ray enters 11-7 with a 3.14 ERA and 126 strikeouts. He also gave Tampa Bay only 1 run over 6 innings in his most recent start.
Rodón has pitched well too. The Yankees left-hander comes in 4-3 with a 3.20 ERA, so there isn’t much separating these starters on paper.
Friday showed why San Diego can win this kind of game.
The Padres scratched out the tying run, stayed alive into extra innings and then got Luis Campusano’s 2-run walk-off homer in the 10th.
Mason Miller worked 2 innings for the win, another reminder of what San Diego can call on late.
More importantly, the Padres are now 74-67 and have put themselves back into the National League wild-card race. Petco has been a good spot for them, and getting Ray at a manageable price works for me.
New York is 80-61 and dangerous, so I’m not pretending this is easy. Rodón can absolutely make it tight.
Still, I’ll take Ray, the home side and San Diego’s late-inning weapons.
I’ll play the Padres moneyline up to -124.
