The Yankees and Mets will play the rubber game of their three-game set on Sunday on ESPN a little after 8:00 PM ET at Citi Field.
The pregame commemorative for 9/11 was tremendous on Saturday night, and it was amazing to see the Tower Lights lit up in New York again. The game was a damn good one too, as a back and forth ensued with the Yanks coming away with an 8 – 7 win to game 2 of the series.
The Yanks jumped out to a quick 5 – 0 in the top of the second inning behind the power of 3 homers. Higashioka blasted a 2-run bomb, Bret Gardner followed suit with his own 2-run dinger and the Judge made it a backa-to-back and a belly-to-belly but the Mets came right back. (Yes, I meant a backa-to-back misspelled on purpose, come on man, Sterling much?!?!)
The Metropolitans responded with 3 runs of their own in the bottom of the second inning and it was 5 – 3 in no time.
Tajuan Walker had a nice outing as he struck out Gio Urshela on his 103rd pitch to end his night in the 6th inning. The Mets bailed him out and took a 6th inning lead, 6 – 5, and then extended it to 7 – 5 before the Yanks pounded out 3 runs in the 8th to go on and take the eventual W on Saturday.
Well, if any team in the American League needed to right the ship it was certainly the NY Yankees. Going into Saturday night’s 9/11 game the Yanks had lost 11 of their last 13 and were mired in a 7-game losing skid. Finally, the bats woke up early and they stayed on track enough to break out for 8 runs and a streak-stopping win.
TELL IT TO THE JUDGE!
Hmm Hmm, you know what I mean by that if you watched his night unfold. Aaron Judge busted out the brace and stroked 2 balls into the outfield seats. I mentioned last night that he tried to spark everyone up on Friday to get the team back on track but the game 1 loss was just another letdown.
Winning game 2 of the series gave the Empire fans some home to stay in the playoff conversation, as well as the players, of course. Any sign of confidence is going to be large with only so many games left to play in the regular season.
Chapman came on and shut the door in the 9th, although he didn’t do it comfortably, to say the least. J.D Davis pinch-hit a double and reached 3rd base with one out but the Mets were unable to either tie or win the game. Chapman has not lacked controversy lately and his ability to get 3 outs and secure a win in the 9th are obviously massive.
The Yanks have still yet to announce their Sunday starter as of 10 AM ET but the play must go up. (Edited at 2:30 PM ET) Clarke Schmidt got a callup to make his first start this season in the bigs for the Yankees… in the middle of a playoff chase!? This even more so supports the bet given on the total to go over the number. Schmidt appeared in 3 games in 2020 and made one start with an ERA of 7.11.
The Mets certainly didn’t lack the effort to lose game 2 of the series last night, but the bullpen once again was unable to hold a lead. The Mets were up 7 – 5 and had 6 outs to get to take game 2, which would have been crushing to the Yankees. Not to mention the help it would have done the Mets with the Braves losing as well.
The Polar Bear ripped a foul ball off of his shin/ankle in the 7th inning and even I sat here going OWWWW! He went down in a heap and I think all of the fans watching were wondering how easily he was going to get up from that. I mean, have ripped a ball off your shin lately when you are leading the league in every major offensive category we have in baseball? The dude swings angry lumber… nuff said!
Anyway, so the great start from Taijuan went to waste and ended up a Mets loss. The Mets and Rojas are putting Carlos Carrasco on the bump for the series-deciding game on Sunday. I mentioned Carrasco when I covered his last start against Miami and how he has gotten his shit together since starting off getting bashed from the long absence to start 2021. Carrasco only gave up 1 earned run and 4 runs overall in a 9 – 4 Mets win on September 7.
James McCann had a sweet night banging a triple and a bomb which at the time gave the Mets a 6 – 5 lead. McCann hasn’t exactly gotten back the to form he was in before the Mets picked him up, so he needs to really end the season making a big impression with Rojas and the Mets brass.
Javier Baez had a pretty big throwing error that helped extend the 8th inning which also led to the Yanks taking the lead. A double-play ball off the bat of Luke Voit should have gotten the Mets out of a jam, but Baez over-threw Alonso, and Velazquez was able to score from third making the only error of the game hurt big time.
