This is the first time these rivals will square off this season. Of the two teams Boston is definitely playing better. The Yankees have been struggling and are at the bottom of the division to start the series.
The Red Sox were just beating up on the Braves to start the week but you can bet they had this weekend circled on their calendar as a check on where they are at.
New York Yankees
New York’s offense struggled down in Texas.
They scored just six runs over the three games and lost the final two before coming north up to Boston. Right now there is a not a ton going right with this club which is in last place in the AL East. At the plate and on the mound they are looking for somebody to give them a spark.
The Yankees have been struggling to turn things over to their vaunted bullpen this season. Masahiro Tanaka has been their best starter though and seems to be getting stronger with each start.
He has given up exactly 2ER in every start this season. His dependability has been key for this team struggling in the rotation.
No bullpen strikes out batters at a rate better than the Yankees and they haven’t even dressed Aroldis Chapman yet – he is two weeks away. The backend locks it down and is intimidating to lefties and righties. It is hard to find a better group.
Boston Red Sox
The Sawx have gotten hot. They have won four in a row heading into Thursday and will be looking to sweep the hapless Atlanta Braves. The offense has been doing most of the damage, ranking fifth in the Majors.
They are getting great balance too as 7 players have already reached double figures in RBI, led by Big Papi of course.
As long as they keep slugging away they can wait for the pitching to come around. They are just a smidge behind Baltimore right now.
Heny Owens is one of the Red Sox top prospects. He made his MLB debut last year with limited success and his one start this season was forgettable.
It is still too early to write him off and it is an advantage to start lefties against the Yankees for sure.
Boston’s bullpen numbers are up and down. They lead the Majors in Ks but that is in part because they have been used a lot. Their 2-5 record and close to 4 ERA show that this group is not exactly slamming the door.
Even closer Craig Kimbrel has been roughed up early on.
