The true definition of a “Cinderella” takes the field Friday in Game 1 of the NLDS as the Mets travel to Los Angeles to take on the Dodgers.
Both teams essentially cruised to their respective division titles, but the question remains which pitching staff will step up.
On paper, the Mets have the clear cut edge, top to bottom, with their starters. However, Dodgers’ Game 1 starter Clayton Kershaw will certainly beg to differ.
New York Mets
The Mets used the trade deadline to bolster their lineup and got some stellar 2nd half pitching as they cruised right past the Nationals to an NL East division title.
OF Yoenis Cespedes was the major key for the Mets en route to their title as he literally crushed the ball every single game. Cespedes had a bit of a setback as he was hit in the hand with a pitch, but is expected to be 100% heading into this series.
In Game 1, the Mets will turn to RH Jacob deGrom. The RH finished the regular season with a 14-8 record and an ERA of only 2.54.
DeGrom did struggle in the 2nd half, but closed the season off on an extremely high note as he allowed just a single run over a 10 inning span during his last 2 starts.
DeGrom struck out 205 batters and walked just 38 in his tenure this season.
DeGrom does have a bad track record against the Dodgers though. He brings in an 0-2 record with an ERA of 3.66 in 3 starts against Los Angeles.
The Dodgers used their massive payroll to pretty much do whatever they wanted to when it came to signing players. They invested heavily in LH Clayton Kershaw and it has been worth every single penny.
However, it’s hard to ignore Kershaw’s post season numbers, which everyone is talking about. Kershaw brings in an 0-4 record with a 7.15 ERA over his last 4 Postseason starts.
A date with the Mets here in this Postseason may be just what he needs though. Kershaw has dominated and been unhittable at times against the Mets as he brings in a record of 6-0 with an ERA of 1.34 in 9 career starts.
Back on July 23rd, Kershaw went a complete game allowing just 3 hits while striking out 11.
OF Yasiel Puig is on the Playoff roster, even though he continues to battle a hamstring injury that has lingered for the past month.
