Major League baseball is back following offseason contention as the retooled New York Mets visit a Washington Nationals group seeking to defy its critics.
NYM has won eight of their last 11 meetings vs. the Nationals.
Undecided opens this afternoon for New York, and Patrick Corbin starts for Washington.
The Mets’ 2022 MLB championship odds (+1280) rank 7th, according to Vegas Insider. Conversely, Washington (+13500) ranks 25th on the same list.
New York opens as -145 road favorites opposite the Nationals.
New York Mets
After leading the NL East for several months before collapsing last season, the Mets spent big this summer to prevent another meltdown. New additions Max Scherzer, Chris Bassitt, Starling Marte, and Mark Canha provide NYM with perhaps the National League’s most reliable lineup and starting rotation.
Of course, New York won’t be whole until staff ace Jacob deGrom returns in May from a shoulder injury. With deGrom out, and starters Scherzer and Taijuan Walker questionable for opening day, New York’s starting arm remains unknown as of Tues. afternoon.
Speaking of injuries, keep an eye on the status of Pete Alonso, Brandon Nimmo, and Starling Marte. Each of those three top NYM offensive cogs are questionable vs. Washington. Expect far fewer runs between the Mets and Nationals if those veterans are unavailable.
Though, for the sake of this article’s publication timeliness, I’ll assume Alonso, Nimmo and Marte will each be available at some capacity Thursday.
Washington Nationals
As with each MLB club on April 7, hope springs eternal for a Nationals group that finished 2021 locked in the NL East cellar. While offense wasn’t a Washington issue during their recent 65-97 campaign, the team’s shaky pitching took a major offseason hit when NYM nabbed Max Scherzer.
At 8-4 (2.76 ERA) Scherzer was the only starting Washington hurler to finish 2021 with a winning record. The Nationals also did little over the summer to remold a staff which fielded the 25th worst ERA last fall.
That stated, expect quality outings today from position names like Juan Soto, Nelson Cruz, and Josh Bell. However, Washington’s mound issues should allow big return offense from the Mets.
Patrick Corbin’s status as the Nats’ opening-day arm does little, at least on paper, to quell such pessimism facing his team. Corbin finished 2021 with an NL-worst 9-16 record, 5.82 ERA, and more league worst marks after allowing 111 earned runs and 37 home runs.
If the revamped Mets rock Corbin early, NYM could add big run totals vs. Washington’s bullpen.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
-
Washington is 2-8 in its last ten games.
- Under is 4-0 in Corbins last 4 starts with the total set at 9.0-10.5.
-
Under is 5-0 in Corbins last 5 starts on grass.
Under is 5-0 in Corbins last 5 starts overall.
Under is 4-1-1 in Mets last 6 during game 1 of a series.
New York Mets vs. Washington Nationals MLB Prediction:
As of Wednesday afternoon, It’s looking like Max Scherzer will face his old team for game two of this series. To wit, according to reports, Tylor Megill, David Peterson, or Trevor Williams are the possible NYM opening day starting options. None of those names are what you’d consider optimal day one material.
Considering the uncertainty surrounding New York’s mound starter this Thursday, wagering today’s contest is a true gamble.
From my many years spent playing, observing and analyzing sports, I’ll give the Mets a slight edge here since their lineup is better than Washington’s, and whoever they put on the bump did not lead the NL in losses last year.
Also be advised that Brandon Nimmo just recieved a cortisone shot in his neck, and remains uncertain for Thursday’s outing.
Considering all factors, and because I’d like YOU to pad that bankroll, I’ll cautiously take the ailing Mets ML here vs. a group that struggled mightily last season. Good luck!
