Two young pitchers with a ton of promise and bright futures ahead will duel in this start, one making his MLB debut and the other dominating this year in his first full season.

Top-prospect Jameson Taillon will make his first start, but will face a tough test against Noah Syndergaard in a duel of 2nd place teams in their respective NL divisions.

New York Mets

I recently wrote about Noah Syndergaard and the Mets, and I’m going back to the well in this matchup. Syndergaard is quickly become a top-5 starter in this league, with ridiculous stuff and a confidence in all of his pitches to throw them in any count.

Thor has a 6-2 record with a 1.91 ERA, 90 K and a 0.96 WHIP on the year. He is in the Cy Young conversation at this point in his first full season, although an innings limit may factor in.

Yoenis Cespedes has recently returned from a hip injury this week, but is the driving force behind the Mets offense along with nice surprise Neil Walker. It may take a few days for Yoenis to shake off the rust, but he’s put together a nice season with 15 HR and a .277 average. The Mets will either need to look for a trade to give these two some offensive support or hope for a resurgence from the aging Curtis Granderson and youngster Michael Conforto.

Pittsburgh Pirates

The start will mark the first of Jameson Taillon’s career, the former #2 overall pick behind Stephen Strasburg. He has been dominant this season in Triple-A, sporting 2.04 ERA and a 1.27 WHIP with an outstanding 66K:6BB ratio. In his 10 games started in AAA, he’s also allowed just 2 home runs against in the hitter friendly league. Taillon comes in with a high pedigree and big expectations, but gets the luxury of pitching at home in his first appearance.

The Pittsburgh offense is a strong one, having scored the 6th most runs on the season a 277 and a collective batting average of .277 which is good for 2nd behind only the Red Sox. There is just one issue in this matchup and that would be the guy that will be delivering the ball against the Bucs, the aptly nicknamed “Thor” in Noah Syndergaard.

He has been utterly dominant with batters hitting just .225 against him this year.
