These are two of the better teams in the National League so this is a fun one to watch over the weekend.
Both are good but with flaws and will be looking to make a statement about who the second best team in the National League is at the moment.
The Mets can pitch but when they hit they bring the lumber, it has been surprising.
New York Mets
Never in a million years would I think the Mets would lead the league in homers but right now they are, with Yoenis Cespedes leading the way.
Neil Walker is providing everything Daniel Murphy did and then some making this a fairly prolific, though boom or bust offense. Combine that with the way this team can pitch and they are a threat to the Cubs.
Barolo Colon made the news with a home of late but he is also pitching well.
On a staff full of aces he has the second best ERA among starters and a phenomenal K/BB ratio.
No he does not blow hitters away liek he used to but he is frustratingly effective.
The Mets have been getting great performances from their bullpen too. This team is in really good shape right now.
L.A. Dodgers
As this is being written the Dodgers are currently leading the very mediocre NL West – they are the only team over .500. This team profiles similarly to New York except they don’t go yard with any frequency, they are 29th in homers.
That puts a lot of pressure on a group that is not great at manufacturing runs and does not have a lot of elite contact hitters. Yasiel Puig is still more potential than production.
The primary constant of the Dodgers is the brilliance of Clayton Kershaw.
He may not have the lowest ERA on the team but his peripherals are stupid.
In 53 innings he has 64 strikeouts against just 3 walks.
He is essentially walking a guy every other start not even. The bullpen has been mostly very good with Kenley Jansen locking down the 9th inning. The pitching is in good hands.

If so this is a decent spot with the Mets being a good team and capable of winning a 2-1 ballgame.
I am not saying that is what I would do but I do understand how some might play it that way.
