The New York Mets and the Atlanta Braves will begin what should be an intense four-game set this Monday evening. The Mets have won eight of twelve meetings this season, and they took four of five from the Braves in Queens earlier this month.
The Braves come into this one as the favorites with the total opening at 8. Mets manager Buck Showalter will send veteran Carlos Carrasco to the mound, while Braves will give Spencer Strider the home start.
New York Mets
New York comes into this series with a 75-40 record, and they sit five games atop the NL East. While the outcome of this series may alter that margin, the Mets look like the team to beat in the division. The Mets hold one of the best records in the league against the spread, going 64-51 so far this season, while posting a 57-49-9 over-under record.
Carlos Carrasco will start the first road game for the New York. The thirteenth-year pitcher has been the Mets most reliable starter this season, with both aces Jacob DeGrom and Max Scherzer spending extended time on the DL. Atlanta Braves
Heading into this one, the Atlanta Braves have an overall record of 70-46, and their winners of six straight. When playing on the road, the team has gone 32-20. In the NL East division, Atlanta currently sits 2nd So far, the team has gone 65-57 vs the runline. The Braves’ over-under record is 58-53-5.
Spencer Strider will get the ball Monday night for Atlanta. The second-year pitcher from Clemson has been pretty solid this season, posting a 6-4 record, with a 3.11 ERA and 138 strikeouts. Strider’s last outing, against these same Mets, ended pretty quickly, so look for a bounce back performance from him at home here, in what should be a hostile environment.
Strider usually manages to eek out five-six innings of work, which has made life a bit busy for the Braves bullpen when he goes, which currently holds a 3.29 ERA.
Atlanta has been very productive and powerful at the plate this season, ranking second in home runs (168), third in slugging percentage (.441), and runs scored (531).
