The Cards are in the final stretch of their excellent season. They have yet to clinch the division but the odds of getting caught are getting slimmer and slimmer.
Milwaukee has been playing spoiler lately but on the road with the cast they are putting out there that is going to be a tough go this weekend and especially on Friday night.
Milwaukee Brewers
This has definitely been a write off year for the Brewers. They are not the most terrible team of all time and at this stage of the season some of their key players have been traded away or are on the shelf for the rest of the year.
As a result if you look at their lineup you might see some faces that you do not recognize, check that you will see names that are not familiar to you, a la Nevin Ashley and Jason Rogers. And definitely no Ryan Braun, he has been shut down.
Another unfamiliar face is that is starter Ariel Pena.
Pena has gotten his career off to a good start with a 2-0 record but if you look deeper there are some flags. Chief among them is that he walks too many batters. It is is killing his pitch counts which is why he hasn’t pitched past the fifth inning in any of his starts.
He does have one start against St. Louis among his outings – 5IP, 1ER no decision in a loss. Even if you trust Pena to be sharp it is hard to trust this team to back him up.
St. Louis Cardinals
The Cardinals still have one more hurdle to cross, they have to make sure that they are still in first place when they leave Pittsburgh next week. the best way to do that is to keep winning over the weekend.
They recently got some bad news as it looks like catcher Yadier Molina is gone for the rest of the year but they might get Waino back and the rest of the team is pretty healthy right now.
Molina is a big loss but they still have enough in their lineup to be a World Series team.
Starter Carlos Martinez has not been as good in the second half as the first but he is still one of the better young hurlers in the Majors.
He was brilliant against the Brewers last month and have given up just 1ER in two starts against them this season…and those other starts are from when the team was more whole.
