Pittsburgh is trying to stay close in the National League playoff picture, while Milwaukee is playing for the future.
The Pirates took the opener of this series Tuesday, and look to close it out with a victory Thursday.
The Brew Crew lost their last series before the All-Star break to St. Louis, then dropped two of three at Cincinnati coming out of the break.
So heading into Wednesday Milwaukee was just 1-5 over its previous six games, and had been held to two runs or less in four of those contests.
Despite solid seasons from their two best pieces of trade bait, C Jonathan Lecroy and OF Ryan Braun, the Brewers rank just 27th in the Majors in scoring at 3.9 runs per game.
Slumping veteran Garza gets the call for Milwaukee Thursday.
So far this year he’s just one-for-six on quality starts, and O for his last four.
Last time out he gave up four runs on six hits through 5 1/3 innings against the Reds, and over his last four outings he’s allowed 19 earned runs through 21 1/3 innings pitched. The Brewers are just 1-5 in his starts.
In his last start against the Pirates, in April of last season, Garza gave up five runs and seven hits through six innings of a 5-2 Milwaukee defeat.
Pittsburgh, meanwhile, won three series in a row heading into the break, but lost two of three at Washington coming out, scoring a total of four runs in the process.
They did, however, manage to avoid the sweep by winning the series finale Sunday 2-1 in 18 innings as a +230 underdog against Max Scherzer.
The Pirates may trail the first-place Cubs by eight games in the NL Central, but they’re only three games behind Miami in the battle for the second National League wild-card spot.
Pittsburgh will throw lefty Liriano Thursday. He’s just six-for-18 on quality starts, and just one for his last six.
Last Friday he gave up three runs on five hits and four walks through six innings against Washington, and over his last nine starts he’s allowed four runs or more five times.
The Pirates are just 8-10 in Liriano’s outings so far.
In three starts last year against the Brewers Liriano gave up 11 ER over 15 1/3 innings; Pittsburgh lost two of those games.

Free Milwaukee Brewers vs. Pittsburgh Pirates MLB Prediction:
The Pirates are the better team, with more to play for, and own edges in the pitching match-up, the batting splits and the comparison of the bullpens. The only problem might be the price.
But that’s why they invented the run line.
4* Free MLB Betting Pick: Pittsburgh RL and game total over 8.5
Also, Pittsburgh might be good for a touchdown Thursday, which would do wonders for the OVER.
